025... just flying one plane is expensive enough but 5? Only the Pentagon can afford to put that many planes in the air as a package non commercially.

Just a guess but perhaps it was a training mission

A honest question deserves an answer. It was most likely a training flight of fighter jets taking turns refueling from a larger jet.

how high were they? refueling runs are not usually practicied over populated areas, but near airbases or test flight areas. Jetliner? could you see rows of windows? Seems unlikely any kind of practice run over the coastal area. Destination V-burg?

Refueling operation.

It's a Vandy thing. 747 has some crazy techno rocket frame within the bay doors - no engine/booster - they're testing the frame in altitude and speed. The fighter pilots watch and verify the action... don't say anything, it's a secret..

Thanks to all who replied in earnest. A friend asked me to ask Edhatters. I hope he is satisfied with the answers.

I saw it as well. Definitely a tanker and fighters refueling.

I saw it as well, heard a loud jet and looked up ... it was so far up in the sky I barely saw it & failed to get a picture. Pretty cool.
