Santa Barbara Hotels
updated: Jan 12, 2013, 5:00 PM

We have family coming up to visit us in February and no room to have them stay with us. Might Edhatters have recommendations for family-friendly, moderately-priced accommodations in Santa Barbara, possibly near harbor for convenient walking and sight-seeing, although all recommendations are welcome.

Best kept secret in town is the Motel Six, right off of Cabrillo near the East Beach Bathhouse. Recently updated, very quiet, 1/2 block to the beach (you can actually see the beach from the front of the building). Best bang for the buck.

Try Santa Barbara Hot Spots 564-1637. Ruth is really helpful and knows every place and I mean EVERY hotel or motel in town. She helped place all our out of town guests for our son's wedding this past August. She worked at even getting last minute rooms for some. It is an amazing service and is free,

Motel 6 is nice but it's not near the harbor. You might walk along that section of Cabrillo Blvd west of State Street and check out the various motels/inns, including those just off Cabrillo. There are quite a few.

Depending on how many people are coming, VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner) houses or condos/apartments often make a lot of sense. The out of town guests have an actual house with kitchen and living room to stay in, as well as their own beds. When our extended family from back east visits, they always do this, and it has worked very well. One rental was in Goleta, another behind SB/ Montecito, and both were great deals when compared to the cost of renting individual rooms and meals out. Type "vrbo santa barbara" into Google and you'll get lots of hits.

Morton Bay Fig Tree Motel.

A little chilly this time of year but the price is right.

10% discount for every bottle of Mad Dog 20/20 you provide.

I would look at airbnb.com and search Santa Barbara for your dates. If that doesn't work for you, we stayed at Beachside Inn when we were fumigated for termites and it was fine. Accommodations are fine, price is reasonable, parking is fabulous and the location is great. Our room overlooked the park and it was fun to watch the birds careen by our 2nd floor room.

Most of VRBO are illegal. Check that they are registered with the City/County first. they need to pay TOT. Try legal hotels/motels.

I just took a look at Expedia's list of hotels in our area and they've got them listed by rate. You'd be surprised at the discounts some are making just to fill the rooms during the off season.

942, Most VRBO's are not illegal, we have stayed in over a dozen in the last few years and they all have legit Realtor or other management that always charge taxes and are registered. Maybe you're talking about Craig's list which I'm guessing rented out the house behind us with a pool for a couple of days (week-ends) every weekend this summer. Some family get-to-gathers with sceaming kids and others with drunken college students.

Beach House is the absolute best! They have kitchens, you can bring a dog, living room and bedrooms have fireplaces. Walk right to the harbor. Near Castillo. I am not sure of the street. The owners are lovely people.
