Fried Chicken
updated: Jan 12, 2013, 3:00 PM

My husband has been craving good fried chicken. I am just not good at making my own. I checked the referrals and don't see any for fried chicken. Is there anywhere in town that serves it?

This thread made me so hungry that I just ordered chicken dinners to go from Clementines to eat while we enjoy the football game. Clementines is the best with made from scratch bread, dressings, soups, & pie.

Thanks for the Tree House recommendation; I haven't been there in too long. I did grow up on the north side. Bet they have corned beef too.
The topic made me drool. Several years ago, I had KFC and Ralph's deli within a few months of each other and Ralph's won.

The best I've had was at Harry's. It was on their regular menu years ago, then a special; I can't afford them anymore so I don't know. No batter, just super crispy with no pockets of dough. And I detest white meat; will eat it with tons of mayo & share it with pets. Oooooh, craving.....

OP, I don't pan or deep fry either. Fried chicken or fish & chips is an eat-out treat. I love shake and bake! Easy to make homemade, or buy a generic packet and dilute and doctor it up. A little processed wheat starch and MSG is a good thing.
(google "copycat shake and bake chicken")

Didn't the Tree House used to be on Hollister and Modoc near the railroad bridge? And wasn't it spared during the Painted Cave Fire in June 1990?

COMMENT 362948 agree helpful negative off topic

2013-01-12 07:21 PM

Hollister and Modoc? The only place I can remember selling chicken near there was the Philadelphia House, and they were more likely to serve Coq au vin. They were not spared during the Painted Cave Fire.

Maybe the Falls Cocktails at Modoc and Hollister? I remember eating something there that resembled chicken, or maybe I just drank it. I forget.

933, every chicken you eat at a restaurant or buy at the grocery store is factory farmed, in the USA. Too expensive to import factory farmed. Yes, I know you can buy organic chicken at certain stores and I assume there are restaurants who locally source that I'm not aware of.

I'm not casting aspersions on those who step out of the box. I eat very little meat cuz I'm poor; I'd eat responsibly raised meat if I could. And I love eggs, which are terrible pale tasteless. Looking forward to spring when I can find some real, home raised eggs.

And China LOVES the fact that Americans beside Southerners don't eat chicken feet! Big export. Mmmmm, trotters & chicken feet. And heart, good muscle protein. At least some of us look to alternatives and our foreparents' solutions to poverty.

921, I want to live at your house.! How fun to get your appetite whetted by this post, and then act on the idea. This post was what I DO love about edhat. People get together and consider then provide a wealth of answers to the posed question. At the risk of veering off-topic, I have to say I don't understand why people can't resist going....off topic. It is a fried chicken thread, not a what's the healthiest way to raise a chicken thread. No matter how well meaning, off-topic is a buzz kill. Like me just now, but had to say it. Respect the post! My new bumper sticker.

So I made a nice batch of fried chicken from home. Later when I was not home my dog fished the can of oil out of the trashcan and proceeded to take the oil through the house out the dog door and over to his dog bed and spilled oil all over my rugs and all over my stuff. I will no longer be doing fried chicken at home anymore!

....ever notice how all the grocery store delis that do chicken around the dinner time rush ALL SMELL THE SAME? curious--they must all use the same breading mix out of 100 pound bags, I guess. I hate that smell. Gramma's chicken never smelled like that.

For those avoiding traditional coatings, try almond flour on the fried chicken- it tastes great! And consider frying in coconut oil. Or just baking it. I know, not the same, but surprisingly good and way less atherosclerosis.
