Green Car vs. Yellow Taxi

Friday morning turned out quite busy for Santa Barbara City's first responders. First, as reported by a
subscriber, there was a two-vehicle accident on the corner of Cota and Chapala. And then, at about
11:40 am, there occurred the second "failing to stop at a red light" accident. This collision, as reported
by Roger, occurred at the corner of Haley and Santa Barbara Streets and involved a small green car and a
Yellow taxicab.
According to those on scene, the single occupant green car traveling eastbound on Haley failed to stop
for the red light and broad sided the taxi which was northbound on Santa Barbara Street. The taxi,
which contained the driver and two passengers, then came to rest against the curb broad siding a
signpost. The driver of the taxi was complaining of pain. Firefighters were unable to get the driver out
of the front passenger door because it was pinned shut by the signpost. Due to the damage to the
driver's side door, firefighters were unable to pry the door open and get to the injured driver. The Fire
Capitan on scene called for the rescue squad to bring the Fire Department's Jaws of Life. With this tool,
firefighters were able to quickly pry open the door and get to the driver. Paramedics then tended to the
injured driver and took him to Cottage Hospital for evaluation and treatment of his injuries. One of the
passengers of the taxi was also taken to Cottage for evaluation.
Police were on scene to investigate the accident and to provide traffic control while firefighters and
paramedics did their work. Traffic in the area was snarled for about an hour.
