I have a question about this. Many times over the last month there was frost on the rooftops in the neighborhood. According to WeatherUnderground the temps never got below freezing. Is it possible to have frost without freezing temps?

2504.... frost is frozen water/moisture right? Albeit very thin layers of it. Can water freeze when it's not freezing out? Water can vapourise without boiling.... so can it freeze without freezing?

Ha, and you thought gun violence or the fiscal cliff were big issues!!

"Frost is formed when the temperature of solid surfaces are below the freezing point of water and also below the frost point.The frost point is the temperature to which a given parcel of humid air must be cooled, at constant barometric pressure, for water vapor to be deposited on a surface as ice without going through the liquid phase. If a solid surface is chilled below the dew point of the surrounding air and the surface itself is colder than freezing, frost will form on the surface. Hoar frost can form even when the air temperature a few feet above ground is well above freezing. Nonetheless the frost itself will be at or below the freezing temperature of water".- Wiki

@362504P

The rooftops are colder than the air, thus frost can form.

681: in a way, yes, refrigeration takes place. Water vapor condenses on glass or metal or even a rooftop. Wind moves air over the condensation evaporating it causing heat to be removed from the surface. The next water vapor that condenses there freezes and the process repeats....

As a follow-up to my explanation as to how refrigeration occurs Naturally (no coils, no freon...) to any surface exposed to air, Just think about why it is that you get colder when you get out of the pool even on a hot day then if you were to stay in the water, Or if you were riding a bicycle and want cold water to drink just put a sock around your water bottle and ride about half a mile with the wind blowing over the sock that is damp And Presto voilà Coldwater! You say it's 100° and you're dying of heat? ... Wrap yourself in a wet towel and turn on the fan...
Isn't science fun? And quite practical too! :)

563 - car doors frozen shut? No, I don't think so. It was cold but not that cold. 30 degrees but warms up another 20 to 30 degrees during the day. If it stays cold, we'd have a problem. If you live outside, you have a problem without getting inside. It's winter, we don't even snow unless a freakishly cold front hits with a storm and that usually comes in March, the snow melts in the next two days. Enjoy the bliss of living on the American Riviera.

578 Great link--thanks! You can go on the map and see exactly where that weather station is located. I looked at one of the other sources of data listed at the bottom of that page--Yankee Farm--is there a way I can find out exactly where that weather station is located? Is there a way to find how this entire site is put together and how to add a weather station? Thanks.

It was snowing the other day on the 154 about 2:00 in the afternoon on Thursday but it was not accumulating and was mixed with hail and rain. For those of you who are familiar with winter weather you know that when falling rain is about to turn into snow it will hit your windshield and form a starburst effect rather than running down like rain. That indicates the rain is very close to becoming snow and a decline of a degree or two in temperature will result in the rain (or slush) changing into snow.

Actually, yes, had car door frozen shut a couple of weeks ago on SB westside. Actually, it was the weather strip that froze to the car, we had a heavy frost that morning. I heard to prevent this, put silicone spray on the weather strip.

Timothy, read the headers of the columns and click on the "Santa Barbara", the second column from the left. It leads you to a map of the weather site including lat & longitude. This is the result for Yankee Farm: http://www.mapquest.com/?q=34.41,-119.75
You can also google the weather station ID number. good question, how to be included. Easy: Google "local weather exchange network"; lots of info. It's part of Wunderground.
