Badly Decomposed Body Identified
updated: Jan 10, 2013, 1:53 PM

Source: UCSB Police Department

On Thursday, May 10, 2012, at approximately 9:45 a.m., the UC Santa Barbara Police Department was contacted and dispatched to the marsh area between Santa Catalina Residence Hall and the Santa Ynez Apartments regarding a report of possible human remains found. Officers were directed into the location and found a badly decomposed human body.

UCSB Police Detectives, working with Santa Barbara County Sheriff Investigators, processed the scene for evidence that assisted in determining the identity of the body and possible cause of death. A thorough investigation at the scene determined no indication of foul play or nefarious activity.

Personal property collected at the scene by UCSB Detectives, along with the continuous and meticulous DNA work done by the Santa Barbara Sheriff Department's Coroners Bureau, assisted with the identification of the decedent as Thomas Lee Broad, age 63. Mr. Broad was a local transient who frequented the Isla Vista area. He had no current affiliation with UCSB.

Due to the advanced decomposition of the remains, the official cause of death certified by the Office of the Coroner was listed as "Undetermined." Next of kin have been notified.

Media questions should be directed to the Public Information Officer, Sgt. Rob Romero, at (805) 893-4063.

UCSB Campus Police have wrapped up a nearly year-long investigation into the discovery of a body near the Santa Catalina dorms. (01/11/13)
