I have a dead computer monitor that I need to dispose of. I know there are rules regarding the disposal of electronics. Does
anyone know where I can get rid of it?

Just wait till they have the "electronics" disposal acceptance thing. Usually the notice comes with your water bill or some other utility bill. Usually have it at the Sears parking lot for a few days. Drive up, they come get it outta your car.... drive away.... done.

Free electronics disposal/recycling options: Marborg's ABOP recycling center near the Milpas Post Office. County Transfer Station between El Sueno and Turnpike.

Marborg, indeed, if it's just e-junk. 725 Cacique St. (enter off Nopalitos Way across from the post office).

Many schools have science nights, where one of the activities is taking apart electronic junk. They handle disposal afterward. Most won't take monitors, though I don't know about flat screens. Printers are fun to take apart -- lots of moving parts.

FREE recycling of your unwanted electronics nowadays at the dump "transfer station" near the Sheriff's office, at the recycling place by the airport in Goleta, at numerous places around the county. Here is a link that gets you more info: http://www.lessismore.org/material_categories/5-electronics

On any Thursday, at least in the city of Santa Barbara, Marborg will pick up dead electronics. You just have to call them. It's free.

Best Buy in Goleta will take your old electronics, up to 3 per day per household (I believe it's something like that). You just walk it in, go to customer service, and they take it from you. They do need your street address to track how many items per home come in, but I've got rid of a few old TVs that way!

You don't have to wait for free events. The South Coast Recycling & Transfer Station accepts all electronics for free from residents. The best thing is they are open Monday-Saturday, 7 am to 5 pm.

Marborg recycling station at the end of David Love Place, off Hollister between Fairview and Los Carneros, across the street from the Elephant Bar restaurant. They are open until 4pm and you can recycle most items (electronics, old lamps, chemicals, cardboard, etc...). You can call them and see if they have any restrictions, but most folks have been surprised at how much stuff you can bring here for FREE recycling.

UCSB also takes electronic waste on the weekends, don't remember the name of the building off hand but I'm sure it's accessible on their website. I've also taken things to the Marborg recycling station. Fast and easy!

If possible, try to check out the trail of the recycling. Do the computers given to this recycler stay in the U.S. and get dismantled and the heavy metals and reusable parts sorted in an orderly manner; or do they get shipped overseas in huge containers (cheaper and possible illegal now) where people in third-world countries dismantle them, burn off the plastic to get to the metals, and live among the poisonous heavy metals run-off?

What Becky & 998 said. We just dropped off a bunch of stuff last weekend, it was ridiculously painless. I kinda felt like an idiot for having so much stuff stored up waiting to go when I was that easy. South Coast Recycling & Transfer was free, and easy to get to. It's off Calle Real between El Sueno & Turnpike, turn on County Dump Rd, and go up towards the top - it's on your left. One tip - when you enter, they have scales for weighing vehicles - if someone is in front of you, stay back behind the stop sign, or you'll have to back up. It was funny - everyone we saw there, my self included, seemed to miss the signage and drive right up, and we all had to back up. No big deal, but just an FYI.

Make sure you take a hammer to the hard drive or even better, what I like to do is drill a hole through it. Just in case. You never know who is sifting through the trash for personal data.
