Where can I find good service and the best price in town for a passport photo?

Places like CVS and Walgreen's provide that service for $8-10.

I have never heard of 'bad' service for a passport photo...sounds like maybe you had a bad experience once? Did you blink?? Maybe you forgot to tip the photographer-that makes a huge difference. Since I started tipping my passport photographer I get fabulous compliments whenever I pass through customs!

No matter where you go, it's good to know the criteria for the picture: http://travel.state.gov/passport/pptphotoreq/pptphotoreq_5333.html

COSTCO though I've never had one taken there but see lots of people doing so when waiting at hearing aid desk that's near it at the Costco that I usually go to.

I've had them taken at a AAA office which I suspect was more expensive than elsewhere but convenient and they did it with no hassle on a walk-in basis.

I got mine at AAA, $8 for members, $15 for non-members. http://www.calif.aaa.com/en-ca/explore-travel/Pages/passport-information.aspx

Go right to the Patterson Avenue post office. Easy, efficient, good photo.

I recently got my Passport. I had photos from Costco and I seem to remember they didn't like them. However, when you go to the post office to submit your application, they can take them there as well. The cost isn't that much, and then you know they'll accept them.
I strongly suggest you read all of the instructions and extra signs at the post office. They post all of their specific requirements and if you miss something, it becomes a huge waste of time and a lot of extra running around.

Do it yourself, then print at walgreens, etc. The guidelines are on the passport page. Do several variations in case the bureaucrat at the desk had some sour milk in their latte.

We just got ours taken at the UPS store on the Mesa. It was $10 or $12, but they took multiple photos and let us choose.

The worst, and most expensive, we got were at the Patterson Ave. Post Office's passport office. My wife commented that they made her driver's license photo look like a professional portrait.

Costco - they let you approve of the photo before they print it for you. Worked great

326P here again. I just read 319's comment about having a good experience at the Patterson Post Office. I guess it depends entirely upon who you get.

There's an advantage to having them taken "professionally." The official cameras have outlines on their display screens to help the photographer get the correct size and position. If you take them yourself, you have to scale the photos to exactly the right size.

328P: Yup, I'm sure it depends entirely on who you get. My boyfriend got pics at Walgreens, but the woman who "helped" him got out of bed on the wrong side that morning & insisted he had to repay for photos since his weren't good (not explanation on why, just "not good") and was so rude you kinda had to wonder if something was going on. It's honestly a matter of how they feel that day. Being extraordinarily nice probably helps, and definitely bring more than one photo, just in case.

Do a google search for "Passport Photo Requirements". On the Travel-State-Gov website they tell you all the requirements to take a photo of yourself, and they have an easy online tool that will allow you to correctly size your own photo. You will still need to print the picture on photo paper, but this costs only $0.29 at CVS. And if you are even mildly adept at using photo editing software, you can fit 6 passport photos on a single 4x6 print.

Unless you are a complete computer know-nothing or have gobs of money to flush down the toilet, you are a fool if you pay $10+ for a passport photo.

@349
You don't want your photo to look too good. Remember you'll be traveling--- how do you look after a long flight/trip? Do you really want the hassle of someone telling you it doesn't look like you when you're trying to enter a country?

I got hassled because my driver's license photo looked too good. Silly girl kept saying "This isnt you, this isnt you. Do you have another ID?" I said "No it's all I have take it or leave it."

Costco is 4.99 and done in about 20 minutes.

There is also a beauty salon in the K-Mart Shopping center that does your hair and then takes your picture.

Ooo! Ooo! I know- take a pic of yourself using your phone and bathroom mirror then post it here so I can ask if you're sure that's you, who's bathroom you're really in and critique the streaks and spots from the mirror for you. Your online buds have got your back. Your passport photo will turn out purrrrrfectly....

Walgreens was good. We walked in and asked for a photo. Within 10 minutes, we were done and paying. They did a nice job with our daughter who was only 4 at the time. It turned out we didn't need one for her at the time. Oh well. We got ours done. No questions from the lady at the post office passport center on Patterson.

If you do it yourself it will take you at least an hour to get it right. If you are cool with making $10 an hour then your do it yourself photo will cost $10.29 and you run the chance that you did not do it correctly. Then the passport office will send the application back and your costs will keep on comming perhaps finishing with you missing your Cancun vacation. Who is the fool now?

I tried CVS because they offered a coupon for the passport photo. When I took the photo to the Post Office the woman working there stated the photo was too small for the requirements of the Passport Agency. Wonderful! So I went back, refunded my money and took the photo again. This time they cut the photo larger. I went back to the P. Office and was told the same thing, it was too small. Actually the cut was not too small but they didn't zoom in on us enough. Our photo it self wasn't large enough. Just go and get your photo taken at the post office so you know it is done correctly.

I call that $12 you want to spend a tax on the stupid and lazy. I hope you are happy paying it.

Like comedy taking a correct passport photo looks easy but is not. Just taking a photo with your iPhone will not cut it:
In color Printed on photo quality paper 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) in size Sized such that the head is between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (between 25 and 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. View the Photo Composition Template for more size requirement details. Taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance Taken in front of a plain white or off-white background Taken in full-face view directly facing the camera With a neutral facial expression and both eyes open Taken in clothing that you normally wear on a daily basis:

Having them taken at the SB Courthouse Passport Application office has worked out well for me. They know exactly how the photo should be sized so it's done right the first time. Nice people too.

Had some done at Walgreens and they didn't meet the criteria.

Hey 426 & 469 it's their $$, why be so mean about it?

Wow. Just went on the State Dept's website and used their online passport photo tool. Took me all of 22 seconds to upload, re-center, zoom, crop, and save my passport photo.

I'm off to CVS with $0.29 in my hand. See ya, suckers.

I took ours and my parents' photos against a white wall and printed them on photo paper...that way we could pick the best looking ones. Came out great! And I have a friend who actually used a glamor-shot of herself...no one cared. I thought it was hilarious!

The SB Courthouse Records Dept/Passport Office doesn't do passports anymore, that function has been taken over by the Post Office.

The cheapest method is the photo booths in movie theaters. You get four photos for a few dollars and they are the right size. We've done this for years.

IF you are NOT a US Citizen, but for example a LEGAL alien with green card, make sure you know EXACTLY what your picture must look like. I am Canadian and they are extremely strict and returned my professional pics last time because of an very slight shadow behind me....

Take your specs with you and see if they can do it your way, not necessarily the US Citizen's way.
