All of this press about the Egg McMuffin is making me crave a breakfast sandwich, but I don't want
McDonalds. Does anyone recommend a better place to get one?

Renaud's brah. Croissant breakfast sammie, sooo good. Bagel Market Cafe on the Mesa is absolutely terrible for bagels. This are not bagels at all, but are actually just round pieces of very mediocre bread. The bagels there are previously frozen and are baked off in the store. They are far far from the glory of freshly boiled and baked actual bagel. They also use microwaved powdered eggs for the sandwiches, ick. Even McDonald's uses actual whole eggs! If you go there just get a donut!

I was working at Jack-in-the-Box on Milpas in 1970. We were selected to make the first BREAKFAST JACK in the country and as Assistant Manager I was that person. Months later, MacDonalds came out with a breakfast sandwich using not a burger bun but an English Muffin. What the hell is the hoopla all about? They copied JitB but used an English Muffin. RESEARCH it and you will find I am telling the truth. Foodmaker Corp is the company.

My point, 168 and 178, was that its not as bad as eggs Benedict or a sausage, bacon, ham, etc. loaded omelette with tons of cheese, nor as bad as biscuits and gravy, or many other breakfast options. It's two eggs over easy with a slice of ham and a slice of cheese on a hamburger bun. You're both right, though, a cup of yogurt with some fruit and granola would be healthier.

Southern Californians are so funny. Eat this, don't eat that, it's bad for you, you eat that and you're gonna die. Screw that. I have no pretensions of living forever, nor, for that matter, do I want to. Life is too short to go through by eating Egg Beaters and tofu. When I die it's going to be with a forkful of tri-tip in one hand and a salt shaker in the other. Hopefully I will be on my second rum & coke of the morning. I'd hate to face Death without at least a slight buzz on. To the OP: don't listen to these Debbie Downers who tell you that the breakfast sandwich you want is "bad" for you. Hell, LIFE is bad for you. If you went around worrying about every morsel you ate, life would be quite dull. Please enjoy your food. I guarantee it will be tastier and more satisfying than any bowl of granola or bean sprouts.

Sorry but there's a huge difference between living long and living well. You can live very, very long with all sorts of awful co-morbidities that go along with an unhealthy lifestyle. You can live to 90 and have your legs amputated from high blood sugar. You can live to 95 with a pacemaker and a wheelchair. OR you can live to whenever it's your time with vigor, energy and good healthy with every body part working. That said, you can do EVERYTHING right and still suffer from some blind-siding illness. So what I do is indulge infrequently (I don't eat fast food every day, maybe every other month) and without guilt. Anyone who eats fast food every day is deluding themselves that it's okay. And anyone who never eats is is deluding themselves that you can't be healthy if you ever indulge in something bad for you. Common sense, happy medium, anyone?

I usually skip breakfast (bad, I know) but I'm going to check out these creations mentioned in this thread. I second the Ellen's mention- haven't been there in years but the food and service was wonderful. When I do cook (and, it averages to less than once a month), I'll make a "burrito" using rice paper (as in spring rolls). So, I'm going to try making breakfast with it. Those rice papers are from made in Heaven, distributed by kind hearted brothers and sisters from afar. You can throw anything in there. My fav, cold, next-day fettuccine alfredo from Pascucci's with leftover salsa from Los Arroyos. I appreciate the solid information that's posted by fellow Santa Barbarites. I really went to town with the local items for Christmas thread. The gift recipients were all very happy.

The best breakfast sandwich bar none is something I saw on the Food Channel. It is a glazed donut sliced down the middle, filled with an egg, american cheese, bacon, sausage, and ham. It is then dunked in donut batter and deep fried. It is then dowsed with powder sugar and served with a side of syrup. 100% heatlthy. Any takers?

REXOFSB COROLLARY..... Don't listen to people who insist you wash your hands every time you touch anything that could have been touched by another human. The fact is that you are inhaling germs with every breath you take, and our bodies are incredible machines that adapt to overcome these invaders. If we don't give our own immune systems enough time with enough variety of germs, our immune systems become weak. Then when we do get whacked with a dose of a nasty germ, it floors us.

MAN it's easy to whip up an egg sandwich. I raised 5 kids and always had (ww english muffins, fresh bagels, esp. variety great flavors) good breads, eggs, and various sliced cheeses on hand. Takes < 5 min., tastes great and holds you for a couple of hours. The problem with almost all restaurant food is you don't know what on earth they put in there to make it taste so good - chances are it's full of fat, and not the healthiest kind. A banana with PB is another good quick fix, as is a bowl of oatmeal made w/milk and sprinkled with your favorite trail mix. It's a bother that we have to eat 3+ times a day to keep sugar levels, but making good habits helps.

@356: Right you are! And guess who hasn't had a cold or the flu in years, has a cholesterol of 155 and wonderful blood-sugar levels? Yeppers! I can sum this all up in one word--GENETICS. Plus, as someone pointed out in this thread, MODERATION. While I certainly wouldn't want to eat a greasy cheezeburger every day, I certainly won't feel guilty about chowing down on one if I want it. And this is my point--a lot of folk will never eat ANYTHING they perceive is "bad" for them, thereby depriving themselves of life's little luxuries. How sad.
