Couch or Sofa Purchase

Where is a good place to buy a good quality sofa/couch in Santa Barbara - would like to buy local vs. going down south. The last couch we bought was at Ethan Allen on upper state, but they are no longer around.

We bought a sofa and a chair from Michaelkate Interiors, corner of Santa Barbara St. and Yanonali St., and were very pleased with the comfort and quality. We also plan to replace our old Ethan Allen sleeper sofa with a new one from Michaelkate for our adult children when they visit.

I second the michael Kate recommendation. We bought a set of Norwegian contemporary media room seating from them in 2010 and we are still very happy with the quality. Il their service was good and we never really needed follow up. The set will probably last 10-15 more years or until we just want a change!

I just got my sofa from Bella furnishings. They used to be called Timbuktu - I'm happy with it and the service was nice!

Room and Gardens on State Street right next to the Mac Store has a great selection on the showroom floor and even more in their warehouse in town. Also, they are always getting great pieces brought in from overseas and/or custom made (like the one my wife and I purchased)

Try Santa Barbara Sofa & Chair if they are still in business. They are located just off of Gutierrez St. and Salsipuedes - Fernando is the owner or possibly his grandson Christopher is running the place now.

I love Mikes Mattress...he is local and has all kinds of furniture for the home. We got our lazy boy couch and both recliners, our beds, and our mattresses from Mike. He is a good honest guy with great service and prices. Go and see...

If cost is not a factor Michael Kate is a good choice and you really get what you pay for. If you want to pay a bit less try Sofa u Love a few doors up from Arigato Sushi.

I noticed a beautiful new showroom directly across the street from Home Improvement on Guiterrez St.(It is actually on the cross street...Olive? That looks as if they carry an array of quality interiors. Sorry I did not catch the name but have watched them completely remodel this old warehouse beautifully.

It seems like the California standard requiring furniture sold here to contain unhealthy flame retardants is likely to change soon. If it were me, I'd hold off buying until then or make sure the furniture doesn't contain flame retardants. I had thought that leather furniture didn't have to have flame retardants but I turned over the cushion on our leather club chair and found that it did indeed contain flame retardants. It's possible that some imported furniture doesn't have to meet this standard. MichaelKate is where I'd start asking about it.

Here's a second vote for Sofa u Love. They will build one to your specs (factory in the LA area), including your choice of upholstery. We've been very pleased with ours.

Mattress Mike is awesome! Not only is he a super nice guy but he has really nice furniture, will deliver, and he's honest, doesn't jerk you around about price.
