This afternoon at 12:30 P.M., Patrol Deputies observed a known Felon. Deputies attempted
to affect a Traffic Stop on South Fairview Ave. near the Santa Barbara Airport. The suspect, Binisio
Nicolas PEREDA, failed to yield and a Vehicle Pursuit was initiated. Suspect PEREDA exited onto
Highway 217 (Ward Memorial Blvd.) driving up the Exit/Off Ramp and continued to drive the Wrong
Way toward Highway 101.
Several law enforcement personnel from the California Highway Patrol, U.C.S.B. Police Department,
County Probation, Santa Barbara Police Department and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office
along with the our County Air Support Unit and Canine Team all responded to the area of Ward Drive
and Hollister Ave. where the suspect vehicle was last observed by several witnesses. Deputies were
then directed to the Mobile Home Park on Ward Drive by other witnesses and to the fresh water lake
where mobile home park staff advised Deputies that the suspect has abandoned his vehicle and fled
on foot. Canine Handler Deputy Patrick Hayes and his canine, Gango, began an active track that lead
through the lagoon and toward the Goleta Slough area, where the Air Support Unit observed a subject
to be swimming in the lagoon. Several law enforcement personnel responded to the lagoon and were
able to talk the suspect into swimming to shore and surrendering.
Suspect PEREDA was taken into custody without further incident and handcuffed on the shoreline. He
was transported back to the bike path and transported by ambulance to Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital
for medical evaluation and clearance. He was then transported and booked into the Santa Barbara
County Jail for violation of several charges from today's offenses (Felony Assault with a Deadly
Weapon, Felony Evading and Felony Resisting) and for multiple outstanding Felony Warrants.
Today's capture and arrest culminates several law enforcement agencies efforts in taking Suspect
PEREDA into custody over the past several weeks in which he has put the general public's safety at
risk. Suspect PEREDA is a Hispanic Male, 26 years old/11-28-1986, 5'10" tall, 200 pounds, brown
hair and brown eyes with a home address in the City of Lompoc.
