Fire at Chapala and Cota
updated: Jan 03, 2013, 2:40 PM

By the Urban Hikers

At approximately 12:15 p.m. on Thursday afternoon a fire broke out at the old Dal Pozzo Tire building, corner of Chapala and Cota Streets. The building is vacant and for rent, which made the situation less complicated than it could have been, in this populated and historic part of downtown Santa Barbara.

Santa Barbara Fire Department immediately responded to numerous reports of thick black smoke coming from the building. When the first fire crews arrived on scene, the structure was heavily engulfed in flames, which according to witnesses were up to 50 feet high.

A full response of at least 5 fire trucks and crews made their immediate response to prevent unnecessary loss. Fire Chief Patrick EcElroy was immediately on scene, along with a SBFD fire investigator and several other department chiefs. SBPD provided traffic control, and may also have had a fire investigator immediately respond to the scene.

Firefighters fought the fire from the street, from the interior of the building, from the building's rooftop and from the rooftop of the neighboring Bronfman Family Jewish Community Center.

Fortunately, firefighters from SB City, SB County and Montecito Fire Departments were able to quickly control the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings and businesses.

The building suffered significant damage. Firefighters will remain on scene to ensure that no flare-ups occur, and to investigate the origin of the fire.
