I'm sincerely seeking thoughts, sayings to remember in life's journey. I'm inquisitive, an introvert, and when I meet Santa Barbarans in daily encounters, I'm too timid to ask what advice is important to be mindful of. What might Edhat readers share with us to have a better new year?

~ When feeling afraid, ask yourself, "What is the worst thing that could happen?" ~ When someone does something that angers you, rather than criticizing harshly or attacking, try calmly saying "Does it feel right to you to ....." It can work wonders.
~ Without forgiveness, there can never be inner peace in one's life.
(Inner forgiveness is different than outer forgiveness. Inner forgiveness is for all so you can have peace in life and not be filled with resentment. Outer forgiveness is on a case by case basis depending on the situation. Inner forgiveness has to do with our internal state. Outer forgiveness has to do with what we do outwardly, such as remedial measures or justice.) ~ Whatever you want in life, Give.
If you want love, give love. If you want happiness, give cheerfulness and joy to others. If you want knowledge, teach. If you interview older people whom are filled with profound amounts of love or happiness or knowledge, they also gave that same thing to others for many years. Try even one of the above things and you will not only have a better year, but a better life.

Three quotes that have stayed with me for many, many years: "Having heard all of this, you may choose to look the other way . . .But you can never say again that you did not know." ---William Wilberforce And, from a short story titled "Dog Years" by Tom Junod: "The love of an animal, however, always drags behind it the anchor of mortality." And, as my dear mother, who passed away seven years ago, at age 93, was so fond of saying: "You only go through this life once. You may as well enjoy it."

This is a very small town. Do your best to always be kind, courteous and fair to everyone you meet because you never know when, where or why you might have another encounter and it will be damn embarrassing if you've been mean, rude or unfair - especially if they wind up being your potential boss, landlord, in-law, friend of a friend, lawyer, kid's teacher, barista...the list goes on and on. As my mother always said, there's no substitution for courtesy

The Four Agreements BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love. DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering. DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life. ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circum-stances, simply do your best and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

Here are several that I have found along life's highway The definition of crazy I like is "Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results" Treat others the way you would like them to become and not the way you think they are. Think of shyness as a form of selfishness. Most shy people I know are more concerned about what you think of them than what they should be thinking of you. "Try never to let Reality spoil your day." Look upon reality as a crossroad. One path will lead you to self pity and asking the question 'Why Me" the other path will lead you to the reality that life sometimes sucks and why not you. If you are enjoying self-pity you are digging a hole you will never be able to climb out. The platinum rule which reads "Treat others the way they would like to be treated and not the way you would like to be treated I have found to be a much better rule to follow. I have discovered in life that many acquaintances of mine do not want to be treated the way I like to be treated. I have many more but why bore you
