1876 Santa Barbara New Year
updated: Jan 01, 2013, 3:08 PM

By Neal Graffy

Here is a photo from around 1876 showing Santa Barbarans enjoying New Year's Day not too different than today. A hike and a picnic in the mountains on a perfect, sunny day.

However I'm always amazed by the lack of casual clothing back then no matter what the occasion. A hike up to the hills above Mission Canyon with jackets, ties and vests for the men. For the opposite sex there were bonnets, full on skirts, blouses, and layers of who knows what underneath.

Many years back I was talking to a very old Santa Barbaran about dating in the early 1900s. After viewing a photo of her all buttoned and fastened in from head to toe along with her equally straight- jacketed boyfriend in his buttoned-up shirt, collar, vest and jacket, I asked her when things got romantic how could you get through all those layers especially with all the chaperones and watchful eyes around. She said "Honey, youth will always find away around whatever constraints their elders place on them. Kids of all generations think they invented sneaky sex, but it was perfected long before they were born."

Happy 2013 everyone!
