I have awakened in the New Year with a hankering for hot chocolate. I am wondering where Edhatters
think the best hot chocolate in Santa Barbara can be gotten. Homemade marshmallows would be a good
touch.

Not sure if they are still in business, but Santa Barbara Hot Chocolate Co. makes (made?) a powdered mixture that is mixed with steamed milk and topped with fresh whipped cream. Yum!!! I like to eat the whipped cream first, have a sip, then add more whipped cream. No one complains about too much whipped cream.

Santa Barbara magazine recently featured a SYV spread, and the hostess mentioned a place in SB that made it so thick that you could eat it with a spoon. That would be...?

Costco sells Starbucks hot chocolate mix. It's good. Heat milk in microwave, add mix, and stir.

Forget anywhere in SB & head to the Bulldog Cafe (across from Ace Hardware on Mission Drive) in Solvang. They have the absolute best, from scratch, hot chocolate anywhere.

I wonder if Chocolate Maya on State/Gutierrez has some - if they're serving drinks now (they were going to open a lounge in the space next door) I'll bet it's exquisite!

079, I'm pretty sure that Chocolate Maya does serve "drinking chocolate" (which is thicker, richer, and smaller servings that hot chocolate usually) now, although their new lounge isn't open yet.

French Press is good, but The Santa Barbara Roasting Co is even better, the whipped cream is amazing there. Both are on State Street.

Amateurs – all of you. The best hot chocolate in Santa Barbara is served up at Andersen’s Bakery, 1106 State St. It is not made from no stinking powder. It is the real stuff.

189P - I think you might be the amateur, we all know the best hot cocoa is at Micky D's or Starbucks!

I was the one to pose the question. Thanks to all of you for your info. After seeing SEEDLADY's comment, I contacted Sarah @ Santa Barbara Magazine. She was so nice to research it for me! Here is what the article said under Mindy's Merry Helpers: I love to serve LA BURDICK hot chocolate (burdickchocolate.com) as an additional splurge due to its thick, almost pudding like consistency. I always present it in a deep bowl with a dollop of fresh, unsweetened whipped cream.

I'm a sucker for single-use kitchen appliances, but the Bialetti Hot Chocolate maker gets used all the time. Put in some broken up 60% cacao chocolate and milk, and it heats the milk and melts the chocolate for a rich thick drink, then foams the milk so that your upper lip turns brown. A few batches of Burdick hot chocolate and you could have bought the Bialetti and have an endless supply.
