The Goleta ice rink project has been delayed. The non-profit group Greater SB Ice Rink Association is about $750,000 short of their fund raising goal.

They should take that as a sign from above. None have made it in this area.

Agree with 165, and wondering why there should be an _ice_ rink in Goleta?

No way! They're short 750k for an ice rink??

And what will become of the money raised / donated if the whole project falls through? I think the Ice Patch was around for maybe five years until it tanked.

With the amount of money they have already raised, they could build outdoor skate parks in Goleta, Isla Vista, Summerland and Carpinteira. Those would last!

This should be designed to be a multi-purpose venue. Configure it to handle a variety of activities so it's not a just for a single use.

The Ice Patch was busy until a wealthy family bought it so one of their kids could practice for the olympics.I enjoyed it as a kid.Any one remember who it was,or if the kid ever got to the olympics?

Seriously...we live nearby and have thought that this is one of the stupidest ideas ever. Take it as a hint that after 10 years you can't raise the money! How about an aquatics center like Ventura has? or a multi-activity center with space for things like karate/dance/wall climbing/etc.?? How about a Sky High? Goleta is seriously lacking in activity centers for both kids and adults. I think the ice rink idea is ridiculous. And talk about a horrible carbon footprint...think of the cost to keep that iced up!! I'm doubting they're going to be using solar power for that. Oh, and for the record...the $750k is just to break ground...the total cost is $8 MILLION!!!! Not joking!!!!

Outdoor winter/Christmas rink(s) sound great. A better chance of survival.
Serious hockey people move to where Hockey is.

I think an ice rink is cool. But I also think maybe this isn't the best area for it, considering the costs associated with it. A plain skating rink seems more logical around here. Admittedly, I would prefer a roller rink over an ice rink, as that's what I do. But if the ice rink ever comes, I'll be there.

Can you say BOONDOGLE? This ice rink has been a bad idea since day 1, and it just keeps getting worse. Gotta wonder how much money that non-profit has spent not building the ice rink all these years -- they got a $250k grant from the City of Goleta, but their office address is in downtown Santa Barbara.

Can you imagine how much could be done for kids in our community with the $4.5 million they've already raised?

I'm saddened by the news that they are short on funding, and I'm saddened by these comments! Part of what helps folks to grow is having a diverse environment around them. Just because YOU want another aquatic center, great. But many others more diverse activities up here in the SB/Goleta area. Diversity is a good thing.

It also always cracks me up when someone balks over costs. Apparently you have never spent the $$$ to break ground. Your ignorance is showing...

And just because YOU want an Ice Skating Rink (and sound amazingly like a board member of the Greater Santa Barbara Ice Skating Association) doesn't make it a good idea. For the record, there is NO aquatic center within 40 miles of Goleta.

If you're really trying to provide low cost activities for local kids, there are MUCH better and more economically viable choices than an ice skating rink.

Oooh, my tailbone. Back around 1983 our office had a gathering at the old ice rink on Cliff Dr. near Carrillo-Meigs. Two times flat on the coccyx was enough for me.

450-Thank you for pointing out my ignorance. I was letting the commenter above know that $750k was not the cost of the project. I've actually kept up on all of the news and costs of the proposal, and I worked on the EIR/EISs for many of the large developments going on in Goleta right now back before I had a child of my own. Don't make assumptions. Honestly, I'm open to just about ANY athletic or fun activities for our kids in this area, including an ice rink if that's what people want, but any project that can't get funding after this long should take the clue...
