Musings on More Mesa
updated: Dec 23, 2012, 9:43 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

I have the opportunity of seeing the beauty of Santa Barbara from the air on a regular basis and enjoying the open spaces that are open to the public. Yesterday, I read in the Santa Barbara News Press that More Mesa has been purchased. The general feeling is that the new owners will protect much of the open space while making new developments. I understand this and am happy the new owners appear to be sensitive to our value of public access to beautiful land, but I cannot help but feel saddened at our loss.

Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rage at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light
Dylan Thomas...as a Chumash person, this expresses my feelings well.

Development on More Mesa is limited by environmental rules regardless of who the owner is, and the sensitive space remains the same. There is no loss between last month and this month. The previous owner of the property had every right to sell it if a buyer was available.

926p, sure it could have happened a long time ago, but it didn't. Now it has. That is the definition of change, not lack of it.

25mil is a steal - one of the pieces of earth like this

It's a fluke such a large tract of land has remained un developed so close to an urban area along the coast in SoCal. Expecting it to remain so is ever so slightly delusional.

Expecting the county to fork out $25Mil for a chunk of land that won't return anything but more expense? Really?

Personally I love the idea the new Saudi owners develop the land for a Muslim center and mosque.

020, my guess is that you are not from California, or maybe you don't go to the beach very much or love nature. SAVE MORE MESA! I cannot imagine anyone blighting nature's beauty by building on this open space at a time when coastal open space is all but GONE.
