Remembering Peter Sklar

To me, Peter Sklar was like the wind. Somewhat elusive. I think he liked keeping a low profile. I
remember winning a t-shirt in the early years of Edhat during one of the "Where is it?" contests. Peter
drove out to my office and personally delivered my winning Edhat t-shirt. My immediate reply when he
walked into my office was "Wow! How cool! Are you Ed Hat?"
"No, I'm just a guy delivering a t-shirt. Congratulations. And thanks for supporting Edhat." And off he
went, like the wind. I didn't learn that he was the brains behind Edhat until a year or so later.
I was with him only a handful of times, at running races, at Lynn's store, at the Brewhouse and on State
Street for the annual dog parade. I loved his infectious smile. He beamed every time I saw him. He was
fun to be around. He always had good things to say about people and our community. I liked that
about him.
Peter's vision of bringing a small community together via Edhat was revolutionary at the time. I was
hooked the first time I logged on. Of particular interest to me was that I could take an amateur sunset
photo, and the next morning, voila, there'd it be for anyone interested to look at. Because of Peter, I
started spending more time looking for the unusual, sometimes quirky side of Santa Barbara. Quonset
Huts, bottle caps, pelicans riding the wind of a wave. Although still a rank amateur, Peter made me a
better photographer and a better writer.
I have only one photo image of Peter….he was doing what he really liked…photographing dogs at the
annual dog parade. Basset hound Pretty Boy Floyd was there, scruffy old Otis was there and the Belle of
the Ball wore pink. It was quirky and it was fun, right up Peter's alley. Peter was, again, the brains
behind it all.
One of the ways that we can all pay tribute to the man includes supporting Edhat. For about the price of
a Starbucks coffee every month ($4.33), you can subscribe to Edhat. I know Peter hated asking for
financial support for the website, but the reality is that it costs money to do all the things that the
programmers and software do. Please consider supporting the site so that it stays around as his legacy.
It is, after all, among the best links to what's happening in our beautiful community.
I will miss you, Peter. We will all miss you. Thank you for your vision and your passion. You changed
the world in a beautiful way.
