The Democratic Central Committee voted overwhelmingly last week to oppose the gang injunction
proposed last March by Santa Barbara Police Chief Cam Sanchez.

OMG how ridiculous. As a Democrat and supporter of local Dems, I cannot believe they would enter into this divisive issue now in a town that clearly has a gang problem. Please. Why set up the Mayor and other Dems to have to essentially pander to gang members. I can see lobbying, on your own, to get something changed. How embarrassing.

Who cares what this group says? They are: "...the group?—?a coalition of students affiliated with City College, UCSB, and Santa Barbara High School"? Let them work and pay taxes for a decade or two and then I'll listen to what they have to say.

If Santa Barbara refuses to protect it`s citizens with a clearly needed gang-injunction...Then I can only assume that the only help I can look forward to is "Self-Help" as can ALL the citizens of this county who are fed-up with City-Council`s inaction.

Stats can be manipulated, have you ever watched The Wire, it's called juking the stats. Gangs here are the same as they ever were and they aren't leaving with community outreach. Shoving our heads in the sand doesn't make the problem go away. Injunctions do not criminalize communities, they criminalize criminals. Most importantly, trying to stop them from associating with other recognized criminals. If some of these "rehabilitated" offenders really want to stay on the straight and narrow, why would they want to hang around with other criminals. Make a new life or get flagged, tagged or possibly body bagged.

The problem with the DCC is a small group of activists show up and they roll over, the reality is the people most impacted by the gangs are the lower income Latino residents where the gangs are prevalent. It seems Mr Larimore Hall and the rest of the DCC are willing to sacrifice their safety and neighborhoods to pander to a minority and be PC. The DCC and RCC are both so extreme and leaning toward the extreme wings of their respective party locally it makes both irrelevant to the majority of either party.

"We're a political party, not a debating society". If that guy really said that, he should be stripped of his office and sent to live with the tea partiers for 5-10 yrs. Until we know why there was a drop in gang offenses, we should proceed with the injunction. For all we know, it was the threat of the injunction that has stopped some of this activity. Anyway, injunctions should be colorblind. If there are gang members of other ethnicities in SB, we should include them. Is anyone saying that there are and we are excluding them? Unfortunately most of the gang members that show up in the papers seem to be latino, so of course they are included in the injunction. Really, we need some more informed debate, not less.

This is news how? of course the united federation of tree huggers would vote against it. I don't understand what relevance this has to getting it passed? Hopefully those with the actual vote will see thru this attempt at propaganda. Also I find irony in the fact that Cam Sanchez would try to ethnically profile latino's. Ridiculous. Go Injunction! Pretty funny the polar opposite between Edhat and Independent comments.

They are a political party and not a debating society??? So the Democrats do not allow dissent among their ranks. Good to know. I have never registered party and you are looking at one of the main reasons. I am not sure about the Injunction, but they certainly did nothing to convince me it is wrong. Their logic reminds me of the Gee, Officer Krupky song from West Side Story. They are depraved on account of their deprived so we need to feel bad for them, not incarcerate them. Sorry, I feel bad for their victims - the people who live in their neighborhoods and live scared.

These comments reinforce my belief that Edhat users are a pretty intelligent bunch. The DCC is clearly pandering for votes and in an extremely idiotic way. What a joke. How about an injunction against Daraka Larimore-Hall? As a life long Dem this makes me ashamed to be associated with the DCC in any way.

So 688, lets protect the civil rights of convicted, proud-to-be-known-as gang members and forget the innocent people who's daily lives are effected and who they prey on. Remember the guy walking home from work on the Eastside who was beaten to death by three proud Eastsider gang members who had recently been released from prison and were celebrating with a day of partying and eventually, murder?? Yes, lets absolutely make sure we don't stop them from congregating with other gang members because that is an egregious violation of their civil rights!! Freedoms (such as congregating with fellow gang members) do not = Civil Rights.

Me and 20 of my friends got together and had the inaugural meeting of the "Democratic Just-Left-Of-Central Committee". 75% of us are homeowners, 25% of us are local business owners, and combined our net income is approximately 40 times that of the entire Democratic Central Committee. We are every bit as "legit" as this student organization. We voted unanimously in favor of the gang injunction. So there. Let's get it on.

Forget the statistics, the gang activity has been on a rise recently, do you read Edhat? I live in one of the affected neighborhoods and I can say, without a doubt, an injunction is needed. These gangs use fear and intimidation to cause problems in our beautiful beachside community. "A gang injunction is a court-issued restraining order prohibiting gang members from participating in certain activities. It is based on the legal theory that gang activity constitutes a public nuisance that prevents non-gang members from enjoying peace in their communities."

640, You are WAY off base. My guess is no one on the DCC is under 50, w/plenty of money; I was a member until I got really tired of them. Where did you get the "student" idea? There are so many comments made about different subjects on Edhat that are only conjecture and a spewing of a personal bias.
