Undoubtedly the most overrated restaurant in SB. Not a bad place if you've never been to an authentic taqueria before that makes tortillas from scratch, but this place is nothing special. The food while totally edible is bland and far better offerings nearby. The constant fawning over it has gotten old. It's a spot for LA tourons, not locals. I must say though the folks that own it are truly nice and hard working people. The food though is softball taqueria food at best. Julia God bless her, but she was far from ever the authority on Mexican cuisine.

I think it is overrated also. Very Delicious indeed, but agree there are many other choices. It's all about number 6 on the menu. Now let's talk about how delicious Los Agaves is!

we are lucky we have a lot of choices.

Congratulations La Super Rica. Maybe someday you will move up into the top 10 in ranking among locals' most favorite Mexican restaurant.

A good indication of how good La Super Rica is...the only Mexican people you will ever see in there are in the kitchen.

Los Agaves is far superior, but if you want the BEST, cross Milpas, walk towards the beach a few blocks, and stop in El Bajio. Their chiles rellenos are second to none.

Only redeeming factor for LSR is that they look the other way when you BYOB.

I would like to see the top mexican restaurants by type of food:
- grilled chicken burrito = Los Arroyos
- shredded chicken burrito = Rudys
- gigantic burirro - freebirds
- chicken enchiladas = ???
- tamales = Palapas
- fish tacos = wahoos
- fish enchiladas = la playa azul
- fajitas = cava
- tacos al carbon - rose cafe
- taco plate = mexican fresh taqueria
- etc...

Without a doubt the most polarizing place in SB - for some reason it really makes people mad anytime its mentioned...

To call the food anything other than great is simply untrue. Its fresh and very very delicious. You may have a personal favorite place or style but the quality and the flavors are tops at Super Rica and have been for years.

Too heavy a reliance on onions for flavor. Every body secretion reeks of onion for days after a LSR exposure.

A very nice little place, hugely over-rated. Who cares... Los Agaves and others are just as good, maybe better.
Fun in SB!

Just this week I was introduced to Taqueria La Colmena, which is on Milpas, where Pavlako's used to be. Exceptionally tasty and reasonably priced. El Bahio is a favorite also. Super Rica - the small portions, prices, and lines are enough for me to choose elsewhere.

Super Rica doesn't take credit cards, hope the owner hasn't become Super Rica from unreported income. Good food, admittedly, but it seems as if journalists just copy cat what others have said about the restaurant and they haven't sampled the other tasty treats at Mexican restaurants in Santa Barbara. I do agree that various restaurants are tops in certain dishes and not others.
Thanks 602 - I agree.

La Colmena just down the road has WAY better tacos than this place and Rincon Alteno is the best burrito/quesodilla in SB.

So much hate and jealousy........

The thing about Mexican food is that its a lot like music. Its very subjective and after too many meals at your favorite place it loses its appeal - like when you over play an album and dont really want to hear it for a while. It doesnt take away from the fact that its a great album - you just burn out on it and need to shelve it for a while.

So I rotate around town depending on what I am in the mood for but there are major differences in the quality of the meats that various places use. Some places use the cheapest lowest quality and others use the best quality. And of course salsa can make or break a place - for instance Rincon has incredible salsa but low quality meats

If you have enough time to hate a restaurant this much, there's something wrong with your priorities, people.

I think it used to be great, and like most places, it had it's heyday. There are so many great places in town (many mentioned already in this thread.) If you don't want to eat there, don't. Why tell others they shouldn't, though, is beyond me.

Sometimes I think people love any excuse to be negative and hateful.

Funny, I am not seeing all the hate mentioned. I thought the comments were very well reasoned. Saying something is over rated does not = hate.

I have never found LSR to be very appealing and there are a lot of other choices I enjoy more.

I feel the same about In N' Out burger - when I hear people rave about it being the best burger in the world I have to wonder if most of their meals are prepared by Chef BoyArdee?

I agree with almost everybody here - It's an ok Mexican place to eat.

Visitors love it because they can see the "little old lady" making the tortillas from the window and the mounds of simmering meat on the huge grill. As far as totally authentic, Mexican, it's not.

For me, it's Cesars - a joint up the road from LSR. I love love love their Shrimp Cocktail. My wife enjoys the relleno and my kids munch up the chicken tacos. Everybody's happy and usually not much of a wait.

I love it. I live a few blocks away and go whenever I can. When family and friends visit, that's their choice of places to go. While standing in line there are folks who eat there a lot and newbies looking for suggestions. It's visited by both Spanish and English speakers. So how can anyone say it's overrated? Either you like it or you don't, but plenty of people absolutely love it. Why this becomes a debate on Edhat every time it comes up is beyond me, but I'm happy to have fewer people in line.

Edhat readers are simply sharing their views of SR and the other less renowned Mexican restaurants. I don't see hate and jealousy in the comments. Edhat provides a community forum, usually the inappropriateness is taken care of by a nanny. May freedom of expression continue and not always be demonized as hate.

Really?! Come on! I'm sorry but La Superica has got to be the WORST tasteless bland mexican food in town, and I'm mexican. I never eat there...if you want the best mexican go walk down the street to Los Agaves.

I don't think anyone here said they hated Super Rica, they just stated that it is bland and overrated. The truth is, it's bland and overrated, confirmed. If you are from flyover country and never stepped foot in a taqueria in all your life I could see how you could be enamored with Super Rica though as it is different from your typical Midwest chips and salsa joint. The most obnoxious thing about the place though is if you are lucky enough to be there when some LA yuppies show up with nice plates and silverware and replate the food while gushing endlessly amount how amazing it is. Cringy!

How come there is so much love for los agaves here? That's some of the most white-ified mexican food in town. I travel to mexico several times a year, born and raised in SB, and have to say Super Rica is still my favorite in town. Maybe it's because i have been going there since i was born i get some specially made food or something, but i would never describe it as bland. Adobada, guacamole, and that cheese bacon stuff in on a tortilla is the best single bite of mexican food in town, imo.

602, Thanks for your detailed suggestion. When people used to ask me where the best ice cream was in town, I'd reply, "What flavor?" Of course, that was in more prosperous days... (or perhaps days when prices were more reasonable?) Nice to know there are others with our discriminating palates...

#16, #9, some beans if they're available and an order of extra tortillas, that's good stuff. Never disappoints. So many fond memories over the years at this place. I just wish he'd expand his vision a bit more and maybe create a larger venue with a few more choices and some chips! He owns that entire corner along with several surrounding houses. So, it's not like he doesn't have the space.

Super Rica is the best Mexican restaurant in town and I eat everywhere. I'm not crazy about it, but it is the best.

Los Agaves is ok, but not nearly as good as LSR. The "thousand-island" style dressing they put on much of their food is just wrong.

El Sitio's Taco ala Pasilla is to die for.

I've taken tons of out-of-town guests to LSR because they ask for it. Been also taking friends to Los Agaves. We're so lucky to have so many options. All close to my neighborhood too :)
