Copter 3
updated: Dec 11, 2012, 10:46 AM

By Patti Gutshall

We have a new bird in the sky, it's Copter 3. It's a many talented helicopter. This helicopter was from the hard work of a lot of volunteers, as it did not cost the tax payers a cent.

Think of what the funds that bird cost to purchase and maintain could've done for education.
Why do we need such a hyper-militarized police force?
What a waste of money. A sad, vicious, waste of money.

Spend spend spend spend spend spend spend. Cut !!! Don't say cut. What's the matter with you? An armored tank is what we really needed.

Um, was I the only one that read the OP's post? This was funded by volunteers......

No edhat people cannot read actual words, rather they just react with venom to perceived injustices.

We do need air support in the county- especially covering wildland fires... What I don't understand is why the Sheriff and Fire are in what seems like a pissing match with their airships... Granted, this helicopter was refurbished by funding from volunteers, but it costs millions to keep running- Fuel, maintenance, rotors, etc...

Curious, how exactly was this funded by volunteers? Donations?

I'll bet that the same people who always whine here about spending would also be the first to complain if their homes burned because the resources weren't there to put out the fires.

Yes, millions to keep them running.
In reviewing several police department budget reports, a police helo can cost between $2,400 and $5,000 per hour to _operate_. I'd give you links but I'm not paying for a subscription.

One million dollars, therefore, allows between 416 and 200 hours of flight time. In reviewing the reports I found, I learned that cop helos can be expected to fly approximately 1,000 hours a year, less than 3 hours per day.

So, yeah. Millions.

I guess it's kind of like a fire extinguisher hanging on the wall, it's there if you ever need it. When you do it's priceless.

Are the same volunteers paying for ongoing expenses? Pilot, maintenance, insurance, maintaining pilot's FAA currency requirements, fuel, etc?
A cool macho toy, but Viagra's a lot cheaper.

@900 Ditto. Who's volunteering the additional costs? I missed that part somewhere.

The logic of individuals is amazing to me. Emergency equipment is often costly and often on standby. But as a person who was airlifted to a hospital after an accident in 1993 I can attest to the importance of them. It saved my life but cutting 90 minutes off a road trip. From the time the helicoptor took off I was in the Opeating Room in under 50 Minutes. As a native of this town I have grown to accept the over abundance of negative whiners, but when it comes to emergency equipment, give it a break, please.
Medical Emergencies aside, quick fire reponse is paramount in our town.

Because as we all know having that money going toward education is soooo beneficial!

The Sheriff Dept has been trying to take over as much of Fire Dept functions as they can. Started back when Sheriff Thomas was made Sherrif AND Fire Chief. The Sheriff should enforce the law. Fire should protect us from harm. Let's get the Sheriff out of the Fire Dept business!

Spending millions more on "education" is the hue and cry of the teachers unions. Spend more money to solve the woefully underperforming grade school academia is the easy, popular and succesful way to increase everyone's taxes. Unfortunately throwing more and more money at the system only benefits the teachers, administrators and classified employees. Unless and until the real problem is addressed educational skill level will never get better. It all starts in the home before any students become students within the system. Teachers and administrators do not want to tell the truth and admit this because it is politically incorrect and their efforts with so many of these underperforming students will make little difference regardless of how much money we spend. If they told the truth the taxpayers would be likely to turn off the faucet.

Does no one do research? Project Rescue Flight funds the helicopters and maintenance. Private donations fund everything- rather remarkable.

I just want to say thank you to all the wonderful people that have been involved in this project for many, many years. This is something that Santa Barbara should be proud of. In times of budget cuts we are so lucky to have this addition to our county.

142 sounds like a firefighter with too much time on their hands sitting in a station waiting for something bad to happen so they can get toned out to be heroes. Isn't that how it works?
