Monday-Monday, Just 15 more Chop Lifting Daze till Christmas, still got a couple more thangs to get. Got myself a couple thangs too slippers what a waste of money that was they hurt the HELL outta my feet and made them itch something awlful. Put my old nasty tennys back on so dirty, old wino shoes look like diamonds compared to them but they are Oh sooooo comfortable.
Had this crazy dream the other night I was crossing the street in the middle of the block where I worked many years ago it was nice to be young again at least for a while nice hot sunny day. I bolted from AM-PM across Mission to the back parking lot of Garrett's restaurant. A police motorcycle ripped around the corner at high speed stopping before me "Hold it right there Buddy!" the officer ordered. It was Officer Scott who rides one of the motorcycle units, I says "Oh hi Scott" "Down on the ground!" He orders. Suddenly there were lotta police cars and a chopper too. I was face down on the ground getting cuffed shackled 20 coppers with guns drawn. "Scott I said What the HELL is going on here? What am I being arrested for?! "Jaywalking" He answers before dragging me away to a waiting police car, "You're going down for this you're going to do alotta time!" I woke up I'm still wondering what the HELL that dream was about?
Pretty cold the past few nights I got enough stuff for me and Pooh Bear to keep warm but I feel for those who are out there in the elements one I cannot help to think by no fault of her own one of my taunters. I got up before light on Sunday Morning and went to Panderia Veronica for a couple hot chicken tamales. I heard her voice before I saw her she was ranting about some injustice in her past and thoroughly into the argument when I walked by she became silent, I went on by. Got my tamales, counted my change walked back the way I came, heading home to the warmth of my apartment. She was still silent, sitting there in a thin jogging suit with one blanket looking cold. I walked over with enough for a tamale, gave her the money and told her to go get one, she thanked me and pocketed the money. Weather she bought a tamale, or a drink is no business of mine the woman was hurting I don't turn down people who are hurting I have been there I know what it's like.
I remember a freezing cold New York night many years ago. A gal and I residents of a at risk children's program ran away together hitching East on US 24 Out of Fort Wayne. It was bitter cold that winter 1977. We were lucky the rides we got were all good people I had .14 cents to my name people helped us on the road fed us a couple even took us in overnight it took us a couple days to get to her friends place in Niagara Falls. Unfortunately her friends were adults with ulterior motives of a sexual nature but it wasn't forced. Not right away they were nice but had expectations I kept saying "No" and one night they gave me a couple chicken fritter sandwiches in a bag, a couple cigarettes, a couple quarters and kicked me out. I was wearing blue jeans, no under clothing or socks, a tee shirt, an Army field jacket and biker boots. It was really cold that night I was dumped basically in the middle of nowhere. I walked along a darkened road blowing on my hands for warmth. There was hardly any traffic I walked fast hoping that I was heading in the right direction heading toward somewhere I might find something to warm me .Newspaper, card board, even a dumpster to curl up into. I heard a car pull up behind me and turned it was a New York State Cop. I ran off the road through the snow he got out of his vehicle gave chase about 50 feet yelled a couple times then went back to his car hell he wasn't stupid. I wasn't stupid either but I trusted no one, no one. I hoped a fence and kept running right into a swampy area not quite frozen, slushy I got one leg wet I didn't stop I kept running for a while. I had no idea where the Hell I was it was too late to go anywhere and buy a cup of coffee with the two quarters I had. I kept walking, walking, walking. The sandwiches were all smooshed in my pocket but I ate em. I was in the boon docks a few miles then found a residential neighborhood there were Christmas lights on most of the homes a couple feet of snow on the ground a lite snow falling well below zero my leg was burning, as well as my face. I didn't know how many miles I walked or what time it was but figured it was evening when I spied a family of four in a living room watching TV their tree up lights all around it. I cried frozen tears remembering that life once so long before. It seemed I had aged many years since then, my face burned more. I was close enough for the family to see me and wished they had for a chance of the warmth they radiated through that picture perfect scene. I continued on my way miles to go before I rest, miles to go before I sleep part of an old poem stuck in my head. A few more miles and some civilization the interstate the place I was looking for the road that would take me back to Chicago to see my Mother. I entered a Holiday Inn and went into the bathroom where I occupied a stall for some time enjoying a cigarette. After which I cleaned up some and took paper towels to insulate my body from the cold stuffing the paper in my boots, my jeans, my shirt, the desk clerk stopped me as I was leaving. I figured to give me a ration of scrap for taking advantage of the Holidays Inn hospitality without paying but he gave me a blanket and let me sleep in the lounge during his shift. He saved my life I'm sure, just one of many people with hearts of gold I met on the road whose names escape me but memories live on.
There was darn near a full on blizzard the next morning when I got out on the highway and started hitching. Somehow it seemed colder that morning. I got many rides it seemed like many people were short term travelers I remember a businessman in Erie Penn. He had been robbed by a hitch hiker still he gave me a ride he didn't see a long haired tough, he saw a kid that wanted to go home and see his mother. He took me a few miles down the road. I remember this other guy probably in his 30's driving an old Comet with holes in the floor board. There was no heat in the car but he bought me a scalding cup of hot chocolate, cigar and a pair of old work gloves. He took me further than anyone, dropping me off in Norlan Ohio a few miles North of Akron. That is where it ended. A long haired hippie I thought was cool called the police concerned that I would freeze to death in the impending 8 below zero weather that night.
I was angry and called the guy a snitch but if it wasn't for him I never would have lived through the night as frost bite was setting in.
I was taken to the Akron County Detention Center in Akron, Ohio a doctor looked at me the next day he wanted to cut off my leg just below the knee. It was a battle back and forth but I got to keep my leg although I have horrible arthritis today. I remembered just before the Cacique street shelter opened a freezing rain falling on Santa Barbara early one morning around 3am I stood out front watching the homeless search for warmth as I did many years before in New York. I felt very grateful that the homeless would have a place to call home when the sheltered opened. I remembered that night again when I saw this poor soul rambling to herself early Sunday morning. I hope that I see her Monday morning, and Tuesday morning in my HOOD. I just want to know that she is ok...I know what it's like to be all alone out there on the street and it breaks my heart to see others go through it. There are those who travel town to town conning people, and there are those who are pure of heart and truly need our help I hope this woman gets the help that she needs.

That brings back memories of hitchhiking at dusk in a snow storm in northern Indiana. Thank you for reminding me of those "on the other side of the window." Your words were the best evocation of the Christmas spirit that I have read in a long time.
