Buying Snow
updated: Dec 07, 2012, 2:46 PM
I am looking for snow for a school project..basically a truck load. Does anyone know where I can purchase
it and we can pick it up in a truck for next Friday. I have heard at fish companies but I am not sure.

Check in with the SB Zoo - their snow leopard festival rained out last weekend so they will have tons of snow brought in this Sunday. Perhaps you can collect some from them and find a way to store it? I guess it depends how much you need.

Hope this is not a publicity stunt for the global warming crowd? Surely there must be better ways to spend money locally and not one's carbon footprint. Cap and trade just around the corner will hopefully bring about more locavore spending on what we produce within 50 miles and not scraped out of someone's open door refrigerator set on high.

The big ice machine on the working pier in santa barabara harbor. they sell it to the fisherman, but i'm pretty sure you could buy a truck load without a problem. It is as close to snow as you'll get.

There's a flashback. Back in high school, when there was snow up in the mountains, any kid who could get his/her hands on a truck drove up and filled the bed to bring to school for a snowball fight. Only days I ever showed up to high school early. Or on time, for that matter.

It's a real treat for kids to play in snow. In Carpinteria a load was brought in last year, fun to watch the little ones. Hope you find some for the school. When I was little it snowed here (1949), even on the islands.

"Snow" is ground ice. Several places in LA will come in with the machine that makes the finely ground ice snow and a truck load of ice blocks. The grinder blows the ice particles out of a chute. You can't just buy a pickup load. It's expensive but it looks like snow for a bit.

The ice rink in Oxnard--shavings from resurfacing the ice. Should be free.
