Teen Voice - 12/09/2012

Instagrammar
updated: Dec 08, 2012, 1:00 PM

By Kelsey Abkin

There isn't much to it. You take a picture, pick one of the 18 effects, and upload it. But soon your picture has an audience and feedback in the form of "likes". Soon, so much of what you see becomes a potential Instagram picture, whether it be nature, friends, or the classic "hipster" morning coffee picture. Instagram has become one more of the trivial things us teenagers just can't get enough of.

We know there's nothing educational about it, nothing that will benefit us, yet we allow ourselves to be hooked. I guess it's one of those things teenagers engage mindlessly in for hours just to take a break. Or perhaps it's the artsy feel you get when an otherwise normal picture takes on the feel of a 1970's polaroid with the click of an effect button. It seems every teenager goes through a period where they want to be a photographer and Instagram gives them the chance. Finally, it creates a superficial yet bittersweet nostalgia. It's an immediate way to capture a moment. Yes, we know cameras have this same ability, however, the appeal of Instagram is that this photo can be shared instantly. Within seconds, friends can engage and appreciate the experience you just captured. Not only is it attraction in immediacy, but in organization as well. Looking through your own photos, all done up with cracked, glimmery, dusty, over-exposed, under-exposed and all around vintage look, one gets a sense of wistfulness. As cheesy as it sounds, it's like your looking at your childhood as though it's a past time.

I don't completely understand why these things, these technological tidbits are so alluring but there's no doubt that they are. Instagram seems to be the present teenage addiction.
