Two things i often get cravings for are Croque Monsieur sandwiches and deviled eggs. Does anyone know where in town I could find my two favorites? Thanks in advance for telling me how easy they are to make at home, but i'd really like recommendations for restaurants / markets that offer them.

Thanks, 165, i looked at Renaud's website and that Croque does look mighty tasty! But deviled eggs? Johnny's Greek Italian Deli (RIP) used to have the best. Where to get them now?

Oh, Johnnies . . . Remember the candy-coated chick peas in the bulk bins? The marbled halvah? Sigh . . .

Not for the faint of heart, but if you're planning a driving trip, go up the coast to Fandango Restaurant in Pacific Grove. Their CM is almost worth the drive itself. From their website: The Sandwich 2 slices white bread 2 pieces thinly sliced ham 2 pieces thinly sliced Swiss cheese Place the 2 slices of ham between the 2 slices of cheese, then put it all between the 2 slices of bread. In other words, make a ham and cheese sandwich. The trim the crusts from the bread. The Sauce 2 egg yolks 4 ounces shredded Swiss cheese 2 ounces whipping cream Salt and pepper Put egg yolks, cheese, and whipping cream in a bowl and mix with a rubber spatula. Put the sandwich in a pan and pour mixture over it. Bake at 325°F for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the cheese turns golden. Fandango Reservations: 831-372-3456 223 17th Street Pacific Grove, CA 93950

I love getting these sandwiches in France. Even those served in the railway dining cars are delicious. After the last trip, I tried making them without much success. Thank you 246 for the recipe. I will try again. Also, I see there is a new French restaurant on State Street in the 700 block that offers a Croque Monsieur, albeit an expensive one. I think the restaurant is "Relais de Paris" or something like that. Haven't tried it yet.

A great Croque Monsieur is at Anderson's Split Pea in Buellton. It's's substantial enough to bring half home and it heats up pretty well in a frying pan. Add a fruit salad and you've got a great Sunday dinner!

Vons Deli section has deviled eggs at certain times on platters of a dozen or so. I bought them for a potluck once and they were quite good. I went to get them again a few months later and they didn't have them. I asked and found that they are considered seasonal. You might find them now since it is a season with lots of parties.

Best deviled eggs in the world (other than the ones my wife makes) are in San Francisco, their eggs were even written up in Travel & Leisure magazine. I wish I could send you a pic, they are awesome! DEVILED EGG | bacon, pickled jalapeño & chive http://www.parktavernsf.com/

Also, C'est Cheese has an outstanding grilled cheese sandwich menu. They don't call it "croque m'sieur" but their truffled grilled cheese with ham added is spectacular!
