Sad sad sad. Regarding the security "Pow Wow" at the harbor, I don't like the fact that Capps was invited and Harbor officials were not. Her high-level summary was useless.

Capps has the ability to redirect some federal funding to these anti-smuggling and Park/Island/Sanctuary/Channel protection efforts. It's good she's informed of what it takes on the enforcement side and the impact the smuggling operations are having on everyone including innocent bystanders and island visitors.

644p, it is very sad indeed. Tho I'm afraid you're really not up to snuff on your understanding of Capps's role. As 659p wrote, this is absolutely within her umbrella of jurisdiction. Next time, try not making it about politics unless you understand. This Coast Guard lost his young life. Let's focus on that and it not happening okay, shall we?

644p, try looking at what i actually wrote. I clearly was not preaching, I was pleading for someone who started a political agenda to this story to stop and think of the man who died. If you have an issue, take it up with that person, NOT me.

I think it is very strange that the Santa Barbara harbor officials were not at this harbor meeting, yet Doreen Farr, 3rd District Supe, with the Isla Vista waterfront, was there. Makes sense that Capps was there because this is in part a national issue.

Harbor Patrol WAS invited but declined. The fact is that it is not their jurisdiction. Harbor Patrol is a City agency and only encompasses a 3 mile radius of the harbor. But I did like to comment "Santa Barbara Harbor officials were notably absent". The should put that slogan on the side of their boats, like they do on the cop car doors... "Notably Absent".

701: if the smugglers are using recreational boats that may use the harbor or drop anchor at the offshore anchorage, that is the Waterfront's jurisdiction. Curious, how do you know they were invited but declined?
