Hot Dog Guy
updated: Dec 05, 2012, 5:00 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

Does anyone know what has become of the Carpinteria Hot Dog Guy aka Surf Dog? He hasn't had his stand out in weeks even on sunny days (if the weather is bad he is never there). Just on vacation? I need to get my tube steak in a bun fix on!

I've been wondering too. I don't actually ever eat there, but I hope he's doing well.

I'd like to know. I used to eat out there now and then, manily to support his campaign against govt. bureaucracy telling he couldn't. Also because we are fellow veterans and he took advantage of a govt. veterans program for small business that they later said he couldn't do. Anyone who thinks hot dogs are bad should move to the republic of broccoli and stop pestering carnivores.

I hope he comes back soon. He's fun to talk to. And I love the turkey dogs. If he's in a situation that could use some help I hope Edhaters will learn of it.

I know he had to go out of state to deal with some health issues of a family member some months back. Maybe he is visiting again and just took some time off during this holiday season.

This guy is one of the nicest people around, he deserves support not only for being a vet but standing up to a government which makes a lot of promises to vets and seldom keeps them. It is just wrong that someone like him had to go through this!! HOT DOGS....UMMMM, DELISH!

He's one of the nicest people... until you try to pay for a $7 meal with a $20, when he'll go ballistic on you (even though he's got a wad of $1's in his hand). I do like having one of his dogs and enjoying the view while it drips all over my clothes though.

I hope he is back soon. I have only stopped there a few times when I was doing a lot of driving to OC . I agree he is a nice guy. One time I had my two old dogs with me and he saw them and gave each a free hot dog. Another time I had my mom who was battling lung cancer and was very down from her chemo. The surf dog guy managed to put a huge smile on her face. I myself usually got a hug from him which often was just what I needed. He was fun to talk to too. Hope you are OK and will be back out there soon.

This guy makes me sick. He is NOT disabled (mild hearing loss...from boxing, not fighting), yet he gets a tax-free ride on the backs of truly disabled veterans. He never ever fought in ANY war.

Keep waving that diabled vet flag, Bill Connell. You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

973, I'm sure a lot of people are sickened by your myopic opinion of who deserves vet assistance and who doesn't. Did you serve your country? I did. And I have no issue with Bill whatsoever.

351025 - Yes I did serve my country. And I fought in one war...which is one more than Bill Connell did. I had a 15% hearing loss after living 6 years on aircraft carriers, but you'd never catch me rolling out a disabled card just for that.

I don't know it its true or not, but supposedly he was a bouncer back in the day in New Jersey, and Bruce Springsteen wrote about him (weak kneed Willie) in the song Rosalita.
"Jack the Rabbit and Weak Knees Willie, don't you know they're gonna be there"

Regardless of Bill Connell's own service or lack thereof, he did California vets a big solid by fighting with the powers that be in Sacramento in their behalf. Because of Bill Connell, California vets who own their own businesses do not pay California sales tax to the state. I'd say that was a pretty darn good thing.

It was a law already on the books but not honored by the Franchise Tax Board -- until Bill Connell fought and won the battle for all California vets.

Bill Connel was a great human being. He would offer the poor people who were waiting for some time to shop at Christmas Unity a free Meal of Hot Dogs and whatever else he had. It is true that he was injured in the ring but he did get the law changed so veterans do not have to collect Sales Tax from Citizens. It was the government's position that the taxes were not paid by the Veterans but by their customers and it was Bill's contention that Veterans and especially wounded Veterans should not be burdened by doing the governments work .Bill had attorneys advice not to pursue his mission and capitulate and pay the sales tax. His ongoing fight is truly worthy of commendation. I would like to address the negative connotation by one of the responders by saying. Justice Learned Hand of the Supreme court stated that it was every taxpayers duty and responsibility not to pay any more tax than he had to. It is not tax evasion to pay as little as you are rightfully entitled to. It is tax evasion practiced by members of Government to refuse to pay any tax. The sharks did not get Bill, but I have no idea what he is up to.

Its pretty sad that people have to start drama on a page when someone is merely asking what happened to a good vendor in SB!
