SB to SY Transportation
updated: Dec 05, 2012, 10:55 AM
Is there an affordable transportation option from Santa Barbara to Santa Ynez? I have free
tastings at
several wineries in the area, but I am not willing to pay $100 + per person for transportation. Is there a
shuttle or bus?

If you can get your bike over there on a bus, you can get to most of the wineries from the Santa Ynez-Casino-Solvang area. I've done it (moderately fit, 55+), you don't need a fancy road bike.

The problem with the bike plan is that it is just as illegal to ride a bike when drunk or buzzed on alcohol as it is to drive a car.

@552 you are correct, I have a relative who got a DUI on a bicycle in downtown Solvang once. @491, a cab would be the most expensive option. It cost me $20 to just go from the SB Airport to Kmart in Goleta, and the SYV taxis have even higher rates IIRC. There is a small SYV Transit bus service with 2 routes in the valley, however they won't get you to the door of most of the SY wineries (although it could drop you off in downtown Los Olivos): syvt dot com There are several companies doing wine tours of the valley, but most of them are around that $100 you state. These guys operate a hop-on/hop-off bus service to the wineries: $69/ea hoponthewineline dot com

Go to santabarbaracarfree's website, click excursions, then SYV Wine Tours. Or check out visitthesantaynezvalley's & trafficsolutions's websites. Or google "shuttle santa barbara wine tasting" or "shuttle santa barbara santa ynez" or some variation & get the same websites I got. Lots of great info out there for getting around without driving (or biking...).

Check into the many wine tour vans that operate in SB. Many of them go to a lot of the wineries you likely have free tasting for and they aren't anywhere near $100 per person. That said, why not just spend the money to stay in Solvang or the valley overnight and do a couple of small tastings per day. As long as you stick to the tastings and don't do it on a totally empty tummy, you should be fine. The tastings they give you are less than half a full glass of wine. That's not impaired unless you have a medical condition or something. Get creative and enjoy a nice weekend in wine country.

I'll drive you around for $50 and a bottle of some of that purple juice! All you need are elbow pads and a helmet... and goggles, motorized skateboards go pretty fast and I wouldn't want you to be injured.

Rent a car for a day--low rates on weekends. Don't drink too much.

When friends from Texas flew into SBA with bikes and wanted to get to SY Valley for bicycling, they biked from their SB hotel to Carpinteria and bought a train ticket to Solvang. Hung up their bikes on the Surfliner coach cars, then transferred them at the SB depot to the waiting Amtrak bus to Solvang. They reported that it worked out perfectly, cost less, they saw more, and it was more convenient for them than some alternatives.

Try I Bike Santa Barbara if you are active too. They have a shuttle to the valley and do bike tours. They have an itenerary, but I believe you can always customize your tour around the wineries you wish to visit. They also provide a nice lunch.

Why is it so easy to find ways to drink booze on the South Coast, but so difficult/expensive to find ways to do it safely?
