Just took a trip north on the 101 and returned home. Does anyone know what the sulfur-like smell in Goleta is? Maybe something the rain has brought?? It's awful...

Nope - usually on the Southsidevof Airport we smell it from treatment plant but never on North Side. Smelled all day.

Very likely sulfur gasses which naturally seep from to petroleum deposits below... You can probably smell them more today because of the really low inversion layer keeping them from dissipating as they normally would.

No smell in north Goleta. Strong sulfer smells can indicate an upcoming earthquake.

Several likely suspects .... the treatment plant, the slough, or the geology of our area. I remember when Goleta water always smelled of sulfur.

Yes, it smelled bad in North Fairview area. Prefer no earthquake though...

Don't know the locations where people are noticing it but might it possibility be Lake Los Carneros? I noticed flying over it last week that there seemed to be an algae bloom. I've also seen lots of construction at the sewage treatment plant between the airport & Hwy. 217 but if it's coming from there, more likely related to the storm runoff stressing the system.

I drove from Costco down Hollister yesterday and it smelled bad off and on from Costco all the way to Turnpike. Not sure what it was from but the stench was widespread. Def could be Lake Los Carneros... was bad in SB when the Bird Refuge had algae bloom!

I picked up someone at the airport last night around 10:30pm and it stank going by Goleta beach park on the 217. We thought it had to be the slough or treatment plant.
