Christmas Day Volunteers
updated: Nov 13, 2012, 9:48 AM

My family is looking for something worthwhile to do on Christmas Day. Does anybody have any suggestions as to where we can go to contribute our time and energy for a charitable purpose?

In the past my family has visited seniors who are alone on the holiday (organized by a local agency) and distributed food to the homeless while accompanying a doctor from Santa Barbara Street Medicine/Doctors Without Walls (http://santabarbarastreetmedicine.org/). Another fine organization is Angels Bearing Gifts (http://www.angelsbearinggifts.org/), which provides gifts to developmentally disabled adults who are alone during the holidays.

Have fun, and thanks for giving back!

Buy socks wholesale good warm ones then go to the nursing homes that the poorer old folks are in and pass them out. Though they used to get stolen I would do that keep their feet warm acouple days.

The SB Zoo is open. Maybe they are looking for volunteers?

There are many lonely older people in our community, in their own homes and in nursing homes. Check with Catholic Charities and Unity Shop or a local church as they often know of these elders and it would mean a lot for them to have visitors, especially at this time of year. Some of the Senior living places like Garden Court and Friendship Manor are also good places to start.

I think the Organic Soup Kitchen serves food on Christmas. I'm volunteering to work there for Thanksgiving. It's at the Veterans Memorial Building on Cabrillo .. down at the beach.

This is so great. I'm so happy to hear these suggestions. I want to help too, but somehow my good intentions never manifest themselves. I really need to just DO IT. Are there more ways to find elderly people who are alone. This is so sad...
