Just about that time for this to start happening. Always a shame, especially when it comes down to who pays for it to be removed.

I hope no one was inside.

This is all due to "Brutus"!

@085: Yeah,I'm sure the few dollars that comes out of the county general fund (yes, the winter anchorage is county) is far more devastating than the fact that this person lost probably everything he had to his name. I wonder how you would feel if your house burned down and I made a comment like that to you.

Isn't the owner of the vessel responsible for all hauling charges? It must be registered to someone...

Also, I thought they required a certain type of storm anchor to be able to moor in the anchorage?

I heard them say no one was around it.

At 11:45 AM it appeared to be solidly anchored a distance from Butterfly Beach. I could see a taut anchor line and the boat did not seem to be drifting. Within 1/2 an hour, it had broken free and due to exceedingly rough water, had drifted toward the beach and lodged in the sand just beyond the wave break. It has a dinghy tied to it. I think the owner attempted to properly secure it, but the wind and waves were too strong. It definitely looked well-cared for and maintained.

I think I'll move into it.

the real travesty here is that the county launched a helicopter. Were they going to "blow" it back out to sea? Worse case scenario was the boat hit the beach, the owner jumped off onto the beach, cracked open a pacifico, and called it a day.... and the policy is, the owner has from three to seven days, depending on hazards, to arrange for removal. After that, the city or county (depending on jurisdiction) has it removed and sends the owner a bill. They will try to recover the costs, but most times the anchorage folks are pretty much broke.

What do they call it? "Fools' Harbor?" I counted this summer, and there were approx 50 boats anchored out there. It seems to be getting more and more popular every year to hang out in that part of our ocean.

Hope the owner got to his possessions before the human scavengers did.

It was not always the case that the County allowed anchorage in that area...does anyone know what year it started...think it was about 10 years ago or about but not sure..... anyone know? And 1) if indeed the vessel retrieval fees end up unpaid/uncollected and being passed to the County, what proportion of the time does that happen 2) How much does retrieval/hauling cost .at least an estimate.
3) Has the County ever revisited its decision to allow anchoring in the "Fools'" Harbor area, i.e. was it a best practices idea in the first place to allow it there considering the amount of "break away" and vessels being grounded on the beach,
4)There can sometimes also be safety issues with beached vessels : leaking oil, gas as often the vessel remains unattended and remains for weeks before retrieval.... who ever gets it done.

I saw the boat being towed in by the harbor patrol around 1:30 pm Friday, it did not look "well cared for" at all. Sure caught my attention, it was so beat up.

219 here: now that I've seen film of the boat in the surf, it is NOT the one I saw being brought into the harbor yesterday. That one was from Oregon and was a beater.

anyone that challeges you for no reason is just jealous. and in need of attention. feel pity not threat.

I feel pity for the boat owner- rich or poor, nice boat or not, a broken anchor line is the worst!

Once again the chopper was on patrol when it spotted the vessel. It did not make a special trip. The End
