MESA LANE BEACH ACCESS STEPS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC - NOVEMBER 9, 2012
The City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce that the beach
access steps at Mesa Lane re-opens to the public today, Friday, November 9, 2012. The steps were
closed on October 3, 2012 to replace the lowest landing and stair segment and other critical repairs.
The project included the demolition of the existing concrete foundation and steps as well as the last
wood segment and landing. The stairs and landing were reconstructed with steel posts and stairs and
new concrete steps to the beach. A number of other site improvements were completed including the
replacement of worn steps, repairs to the existing wood posts, painting, repairs to the asphalt walkway,
and installation of new trash cans. As a result of a coordinated team of contractors and public agency
staff, the project was completed ahead of the anticipated schedule. Cushman Contracting installed the
new landing and stairs, City staff and contractors completed the additional improvements, and the
County of Santa Barbara provided access to the beach via Arroyo Burro Beach County Park. Funded by
the City of Santa Barbara and the State Coastal Conservancy, the new steps provide safe public access to
the beach. The public is invited to join Mayor Helene Schneider and the Santa Barbara City Council in the
ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for Monday, November 26, 2012 at 1 pm.

Awesome news, especially after they got such a late start on the project.

I took my dog to the steps i have been using for well over 30 years and to my dismay my dog would not walk on the new bottom platform let alone down to the beach. All this work is done with large grating and the grate openings are way too big for most dogs. I find dogs to be cautious and avoid grates naturally and now this huge grate is preventing my dog and others i watched this morning going to the beach without being carried by their owners. My dogs legs would go through those holes and she is too heavy for me to carry down all those steep steps. I am so bummed out that i cannot go to the beach this way anymore. I can't be the only one feeling this design is totally flawed for neighborhood steps to the beach.
