The starting salary is very off base, especially if you majored in something besides the sciences.

Makes you wonder though. Not all salaries are the same. Let's say the UCSB person is living in SB or any major CA city. I say they would then really be making less than the person in TX or pretty much any other part of the US not including NYC. With the elections screwing CA even more and setting us up for even worse (Super Majority?), young people should leave so they can actually own something and build a life.

Ummm... My education was worth a lot, provided I was willing to move somewhere else. As for staying here? I was paid 30% less (and classified 2 levels lower) at UCSB than I would have been at UCB or UCSC for the same work. Then when I was brave/ stupid enough to leave a secure job to start my own business, thanks to CA's anti-business environment, and the obscenely high prices here, I'm now earning less (and worth less) than I was 3 decades ago, right out of college. Way to grow the middle class CA & SB! [We're in a business that is thriving nation-wide, but not in CA. We stay local because of family. We're regularly kicked in the teeth by anti-business govt bureaucracies & other factors beyond our control. This area is brutal to most small businesses.]

UCSB seems very little connected to Goleta or Santa Barbara - there seems to be little outreach to the community that I'm aware of. The salaries mentioned in the article on UCSB seem high. Am curious - approximately what per centage of the young people seen on weekend nights on lower State Street are UCSB students?

Our company rarely hires UCSB grads any longer. Too many bad experiences. We mostly Cal Poly grads or from outside the area.

As a teacher, I've had dozens of UCSB student teachers over the years. Usually the Westmont student teachers were far better than UCSB students. I do acknowledge however UCSB has good attributes, some good departments. It would be nice if there were more publicity about the contributions of UCSB for the good of our community and world.

Someone's research is off. UCSB is not a vocational school. I don't think there is any program that prepares student to be paralegals. And lots of high-profile professions for which UCSB does prepare students are not mentioned. Someone just wanted to hop on the "party school" bandwagon. I'm offended. UCSB is a fine school in a beautiful location with a world-class faculty in many disciplines.

1081... why complain so much? If you had lousy vendours and suppliers would you continue to do business with them or would you seek out better? As a business owner shouldn't you be seeking the best environment to do business in? Blaming others for your choices is a flawed trait for any business owner/operator. Anyway this study appears equally flawed. It's mixing apples and oranges to give the impression they correlate. They don't appear to make the correlation but readers of the article are sure coming to that conclusion.

Agreed, ACF. I did the paralegal UC EXTENSION course. I'll reiterate it's an extension course/certificate; has nothing to do with my BA or anyone's BA or MA or PhD.

ACF is spot on, it's a research university. i studied theory and research methods, not vocational skills in my field.
