Grass Fed Beef
updated: Nov 08, 2012, 4:15 PM

Where can I buy natural, grass fed beef other than at Farmer's Market? (Can't always make it there). And any idea on $/pound?

plowtoporch.com then click on "Add-ons." It's a membership deal but I think you can buy meat stuff from/at their State street shop also. 895-7171

Whole Foods, Lazy Acres

Whole Foods carries it (not locally raised though). Lazy Acres carries it (imported from Uruguay of all places, gasp!). Shalhoob's carries it as well, not sure of the origin though.

I'm always amazed of the eco nuts who rant about carbon footprints and then they are buying the Lazy Acres Uruguayan beef.

El Rancho Market in Santa Ynez. It's locally (outside of buellton) raised. Also available at farmers market in the valley. I do not remember the name, but I'm sure you could find it and possibly see what other locations it is available at.

Plow to Porch, best place for "real" food in town!!

721 I'm always peeved at the corporate shills in sheep's clothing. The money behind the defeat of Prop 37 being a prime example. For anyone who is trying to be a good steward of this earth please take a moment to see who funded the anti-37 campaign.

Your point re: Lazy Acres is spot on.

Shalhoob's carries Hollister Ranch Beef -- can't get much more local than that!

Google "Open Space Meats Grass Fed Beef" and then ask for Seth. Amazing beef, and so yummy.

733 - 30 was defeated because it was stupidly written. Proponents of prop 30, as it was written, are the ones who need their heads checked, not those that voted against it.

Try the Hearst Ranch beef from Whole Foods when it's available

Hearst Ranch@whole foods seems to be a spring/summer thing. Now they carry Eel River which I think is NorCal.
Trader Joes actually has grass-fed ground beef, but it's from South America.

Gelson's is grass fed and grass finished. Not all grass fed beef is finished by grass feeding. Some grass fed beef is corn fed finished. Wherever you buy it question the seller on the finishing,

Recommend that you try ground buffalo to see if you like it. No hormones or antibiotics in it. Best price is at Albertson's for $7.50 a pound--more at Vons and Ralphs.

Ground buffalo makes great burgers and I use it in spaghetti sauce.

It is vital to make the distinction between grass fed and grass finished. Personally, I prefer the more tender meat that comes with grain finishing. Even meat that is labeled natural or organic may be grain finished. The grain finished beef is more tender but it loses much of the omega 3s that come with grass finishing.

San Julian beef (on the road between Gaviota & Lompoc) can be ordered for "to your delivery" from their web site if you can't get to the farmer's market: http://rsjbeef.com/

San Julian and Shalhoobs are NOT grass fed. I asked them.

bestbeefever(dot)com sells local grass-fed beef, but it certainly is pricey. Prime NY steak is $33/lb. Most of the non-prime roasts are $12/lb. On average between 3 and 4 times as much as grocery store meat.

The Country Meat Market (on the web: countrycateringcompany) has grass-fed beef. I especially LOVE their pre-made burger patties! The best in town!

OP here.
@866 - I eat vegan 50% of the time - eliminated milk replaced with almond milk, eat textured vegetable protein instead of ground beef, satein, etc.. only eat cheese locally made from grass fed, free range cows (farmers market), organic chicken, etc... So when I want beef, I will eat good beef. But thanks for your concern.
Really bummed that Lazy Acres is from Uruguay - and same for Trader Joe's from South America :(
Going to try the Hollister Ranch at Shalhoob's and Plow to Porch...
Thanks for the recommendations!
