A few hummingbirds I spotted at the Carpinteria Salt Marsh and Seaside Gardens nursery in Carpinteria. I'm pretty sure in the 5th picture the little guy sneezed!! Enjoy!

Very cute captures. Getting in so close (400mm lens?) and freezing the action (1/2000th?) is quite a feat. Well done.

Thanks! 437....70-200 f/4 lens (Canon) and the stationary hummers were just 1/200. Both of those two let me stay pretty close but then the pics are cropped. Would love a longer lens but they are pretty heavy to lug around! The images taken at the nursery were 1/1250 and I was shooting into the light so as a result pretty dark. I was hiding behind a bush and was fairly close but he was moving very fast!! DeniseDewirePhotography

Great photos of an elusive subject. I have tried in the past 2 weeks to get a sharp shot of hummies on the wing with my Canon T2i using the stock 18-55mm and a macro 60mm 2.8 lens, cropped, at from 1/3000 to 1/4000, and after 100+photos, could only get one that was really sharply in focus. Not good results for so much work. I am thinking of sending the camera and lens to canon to get recalibrated. Question: what canon body did you use for your work?

Tex, I have a 5DMarkII, previously using the T3i which is a great camera and basically the same as the T2i. I would suggest a longer lens as the 55mm just isn't a far enough reach, unless you're really close. Assuming you're on continuous shooting, handheld? I usually am in shutter priority mode for birds, aperture as wide open as the lens goes (smaller number) and depending on the light use a higher ISO in order to get a faster shutter speed. My particular lens is a straight f/4 (would love a 2.8 but expensive and heavier). You might take it to Samy's and they could make sure it's working ok. But taking bird shots (especially hummers) takes practice and I'm still learning how to do it! Good luck!!
