Life on a Knife Edge
updated: Nov 07, 2012, 7:08 PM

By the Urban Hikers

A suicidal man who was threatening to kill himself near the intersection of South Jameson Lane and Eucalyptus Lane on Wednesday morning was successfully subdued by law enforcement, and taken to Cottage Hospital for treatment.

As covered by Roger's very detailed and up-to-the minute reports, the man, a 43-year old Oxnard resident, spent over three hours holding two knives to his throat. A variety of first responders converged on the scene to assure that the man was safely taken into custody.

As conveyed by Roger's posts, the series of events included the arrival of a robot who offered the man food from Mc Donald's and water. While the man did not accept the food or water, the robot was successful in closing the trunk of his car, as well as both the driver's and passenger's doors. Ultimately the Sheriff's SWAT team was able to divert the man's attention with flash grenades that produced a startling sound so loud it was heard a mile away. The grenade caused the man to immediately drop his knives. Immediately following the grenade blasts, the SWAT team fired bean bags at the man, apparently hitting him on his rear end. He immediately fell to the ground where he was handcuffed and searched. The apparent "bruising" on his face is dirt, from the scuffle that occurred during his apprehension.

The following agencies responded to the scene and participated in the successful conclusion of this dramatic and dangerous situation:

SB Sheriff's Department (including Hostage Negotiation Team, K-9, SWAT, Bomb Squad, Helicopter unit),California Highway Patrol, Santa Barbara Police Department, Montecito Fire Department, Cal Trans, and American Medical Response.
