Dang. I was hoping I was wrong. (I posted the query regarding the event a few minutes ago.) Interesting that he was holding towels to his neck while threatening to cut his throat. He looked confused, aggitated, and a bit despondent when I passed the scene just before the ambulance, etc., arrived. I hope the best for him and all others involved.

I live right next to this - traffic still moving on the 101 and San Ysidro exit.... I can hear them yelling..... Jameson closed at Humphrey rd. --- I went out and looked and couldn't tell if it was a knife or gun he had held up to his throat...... positive thoughts for a good outcome......

Can hear police speaking to the man in the backround trying to get him to give up...He attemptted suicide earlier in the year also. Sounds like the man is younger talking about giving the father the officers cell number.

Ugh. My child's preschool is a few hundred yards away. Some of us parents had just dropped our kids off when this started. They have the kids on lockdown to be safe, but it makes me so nervous knowing that this guy has multiple weapons in his car... do we know if they have him under control yet?

I was just thinking about the preschool. I remember when SBBT got robbed at gun point a few years back. The SBSO didn't even inform the schools that are within 500 yards of the bank of the situation. This is very sad but we also need to make sure our kids are safe and out of harms way.

187, you simply don't know what's going on in this man's life. He could be having the biggest crisis of his life and may have had a nervous breakdown, completely changing his actions from the norm. Wouldn't you hope that if you were in that situation and not mentally competent at the moment, for reasons beyond your control, that emergency responders would be patient and calm with you instead of uppity and rushed, possibly causing you to make a rash, irreversible heat of the moment decision? Why don't we try giving people the benefit of the doubt sometimes? "Be kind, for everyone you meet if fighting a hard battle."

@187 - I'd not be too quick to judge the actions of the police....the ones who are, you know, THERE dealing with this person and have training with this kind of situation. For what it's worth, I think it sounded like you were talking about taking the dude out! Glad you weren't.

The stand off has ended. The 43 year old suicidal Oxnard man was taken into custody by the Santa Barbara Sheriff's SWAT team after shock grenades and non-lethal rounds where used on him. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and observation. It appeared that he was uninjured. The San Ysidro offramp and adjacent roads should reopen shortly.

I'm not sure if anyone commented on this yet already, but he (Paul Robinette) did the same thing on the PCH in April 2012 as well, according to the Fillmore Gazette. I hope he gets help soon! These cries for help could prove deadly, and heartbreaking for those who only want to help him.
