This feisty guy was waiting on my fence for the reappearance of a fat mouse
under my finch feeder. A few minutes later there was a kerfuffle in the
bushes. The mouse got away.

Adult Cooper's hawk. These will feed on mice, rats, rabbits, snakes, etc., but their favorite food is birds...

"fat mouse"--likely woodrat, looks like a mouse on steroids but with a fatter tail, sometimes tufted at the end slightly. http://cpluhna.nau.edu/images/neotoma.htm Keep outer doors closed, they are opportunists and can cause havoc in the house. A female can have up to 8 kits per year.

When you put seed out for the small birds you are bound to have mice. Nice to have a live in exterminater!
