When I was in your shoes, I was told not to use a surgeon in town and was instead referred to Dr. Amonic in Santa Monica. I had excellent results with him.

I would never dare pick a surgeon from a website. Can't you get a real doctor or medical professional you trust to give you a recommendation? People die and are disfigured from plastic surgery every day. By all means, get the tummy tuck! But do your homework in a way that isn't totally subjective by people who you don't know anything about!

537 here - 558 - You're getting this all completely wrong! The OP just wants some personal recommendations for a board Certified Plastic Surgeon. That's it. She's not shopping, via online "surgeons," for a quick & el cheapo fix. That's the beauty of EdHat in that you can get many opinions to start or fill in your research.

OP here, my online research says that Dr. McKenzie is wonderful but I am asking on here because I want to know if anyone else here in SB has used anyone local and I want their personal opinions. I have waited for over 20 years to get a tummy tuck and I am finally ready to look into it for real and it's scary! It's a procedure that could kill me or cause a host of other issues, I want to make sure that I research in every way possible before I make a decision. I want to do it LOCALLY because we have wonderful Doctors here and I want to keep my money local, plus if there are any issues I want to be able to get to my Dr. within minutes! So 558, your comment about researching is right - I am researching online, I am asking my own Dr. and I am asking my neighbors by posting on edhat. I'm VERY thorough...

Asking others for a referral and picking from a website seem like 2 different animals. Dr. Soares was referred to me by another doctor I adore, Dr. VanMeter, my dermatologist. He did both my breast reduction surgery (GG to D) and my tummy tuck a year later. EXCELLENT results with both. I spoke to other doctors (like VanMeter) for referrals and then interviewed those referred plastic surgeons in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, looked at their book of work (yes, ask for pictures of past clients) and was fortunate to meet other patients in person who had used the services of the final two that I was deciding between. Once I decided on Dr. Soares, I couldn't have been happier. My breast reduction was in 2006 and my tummy tuck was in 2007. Really do your research (I surely did) and I hope that whomever you decide to go with you will have the great success that I had with Dr. Soares!

Plastic Surgery industry person here, both Mackenzie and Soares are highly respected in our field and I assure you that either are fantastic. If you are interested in top LA area doctors Dr. Teitelbaum and Dr. Dan Mills are great as well.

Have not had any work done myself, but have a number of friends who have used Dr. Soares for both breast reduction and reconstruction, face lifts, eyelid lifts and tummy tucks. Don't know anyone who was dissatisfied. All liked him immensely and what I could see of his work, if I was going to go under the knife I would definitely go to him.

I am a nurse and I have seen Mackenzie's work. If I had surgery I would go to him. His staff is also great and very caring. He uses Dr's from Cottage for Anesthesia . I think you can have a free consult and see picture's ect. Call Lisa. Best of Luck. You will be safe with Mackenzie and have great results.

600 - Maybe you didn't deliver on what was promised. Maybe you didn't complete the job. How are we to know? Plus, it has zero to do with Dr. Soares' surgical skills! I've known many people who have had great luck until the final 10% of the job is complete, but can't get the guys back to finish for ages! They press on to other jobs that bring in the new money. Just say'n

Go and meet with Adam Lowenstein, a very well respected Board Cert Plastic Surgeon in town. You owe it to yourself to meet with each doctor mentioned here, see examples of their work, hear about their anesthesia policies and then make your decision.

Dr. Howard Gross did my tummy tuck last year and I am so amazed and happy with the results. The scar is really not very conspicuous as I had seen in many photos on other doctor's websites. He is a gifted artist.

My mother died after a tummy tuck. Complications can and do happen. Do you really need it? Eat less; walk more; do sit ups. Much better for you than surgery.

Who was your mother's surgeon? Was it a local Santa Barbara Dr.? The loose skin and muscles are part of why I want/need the tummy tuck. I have waited a lot of years to do this and am ready. I have a lot of pain and discomfort from the loose skin, it will improve my quality of life to get this done, it's not just a vanity issue, it's physically uncomfortable.

600 here - in 25 yrs - i have never - ever - not completed a project - this soares guy is a sponge - I delivered and he side stepped his way around it - I have zero respect for he and his wife after what they did to me - I don't care if he good with a knife - the way he treated me was like I hadn't earned my payment and he was above what i did for a living. He and his wife treated me like I was a virus - They are not good people.

OP, if you go to the state medical board's website you can type Soares and Mackenzie and see that neither of them have any complaints against them either minor or major. In addition, you can see that Mackenzie went to medical school at John Hopkins and Soares at a medical school in India but Soares has an additional 20 years experience.

I've worked in the medical field and with plastic surgeons for 20 years. I DO think that how a surgeon treats a contractor or anyone else has implications for his professional work. In fact, I myself had a bad disfigurement from going to a doctor whom lots and lots of people said was great---but when it was too late, I found out he was cheap and nasty as a person--and I now realize that "character" counts in all ways! Sadly, I have been thinking of going to Dr. Soares--and the comment by the contractor here is making me question it. Dr. Kit Williams, in Solvang, has ALWAYS been considered the very best in our area---he doesn't ever advertise because he has never had to. People who are really "in the know" have traditionally gone to him---and I know his tummy tucks have been very well done. However, does anyone know why his name never seems to come up so much anymore? Is he "winding down?" or something?!

Dr. Adam Lowenstein (805-969-9004). He is amazing!! He took over Dr. Sheffield's practice when he retired. I had to have complete reconstruction after a double mastectomy and interviewed everyone in town, went UCLA and Johns Hopkins too, but ended up back in SB with Dr. Lowenstein. Extremely well educated, double board certified, and experienced. Top knotch skills.
