It was my parents dog. He was a small mutt and had a great personality. The driver didn't stop, just kept going. Was hoping someone would have seen something.

Anyone that saw something would report that the dog was off leash?

Sorry about your dog but, Just an FYI, if your dog was in the street and hit, you are liable for the damage to the drivers car. The driver is not liable for hitting the dog. (assuming this was a street and not in your yard where the dog was hit) The laws are not the same for hitting animals as they are for hitting people or parked cars.

I am so sorry to hear about your parents dog getting out..I am sure it was by accident, I doubt they intended their poor pup to get out and get hit by a driver who couldn't even be bothered to stop ! Lucky it wasn't someones KID that got hit huh? Doubt that driver would have stopped for that either. Hoping some individual got the drivers number and was able to relay that info to you.....

196, I am sorry! What a sad thing to lose one's pet. I would have hoped that all those commenting here would have kept it to sympathy, rather than hypothesizing for possible damage to the hit and run car.

:( That sucks! Unfortunately there is no liability for the driver, it's all on the owner of the dog but it is still sad.

I am so sorry your parents' dog was struck and killed. Regardless of liability, the person should have stopped to offer help. :(

If the person had a decent bone in their body they would have stopped. No matter who's fault it is it aien't right saying it over and over again. I'm sorry for you and your parents loss OP.

I live on N. Hope and it sent chills down my back to hear this. I would be inconsolable if it were my dog. There is a man who walks down the sidewalk everyday who might have seen something. I don't know his name or where he actually lives, but he has been injured and walks down N. Hope and bank again. He uses crutches and wears a safety helmet. If you can watch for him he may have seen something. He goes by around that time. I know there are many who could not live with themselves after doing such a thing, and I, as well as so many others, are sorry for their loss and pray that they will somehow find comfort in this sad time. If you get a description of the car, please post it so we can look too.

To the poster: I, too, am sad to hear your parents' dog met such a tragic end. Cars at any speed just don't mix with dogs on the loose. Is it possible the driver didn't even know it hit the animal? Sometimes a thunk is read as a pothole or bump in the road. My condolences to your mother and father, and to you as well.

That road and North La Cumbre road where we live is like a race track. Cars barrel up and down as though the drivers have the God given right to speed as fast as they can. What used to be a country like safe place for an early morning stroll has turned into the biggest challenge of the day. Everyone chasing down, teeth and hands clenched and woe betide anyone who gets in their way. Driving in front of one of these maniacs is bad too. If they think you are not going fast enough they cram up your rear and honk! Not long ago one of these idiots ended up in someone's front garden. Ruined their day and the house owner's front garden for the sake of a second or two of clear thinking. Leave home 10 minutes earlier and drive like a respectful and decent human being! Please.

I am a huge lover of dogs, and my heart breaks for you and your family over the loss of your dog :( However, it was an accident, that could have been avoided had the dog been looked after a bit better at the time. To bash the driver and assume the person was driving recklessly is presumptuous and unnecessary. Yes they should have stopped, but aside from an apology, what are they supposed to do? They aren't financially liable. Had the person swerved to avoid hitting the dog, who's to say they wouldn't have hit someone walking on the sidewalk, or hit another car? A horrible situation and my heart goes out to all involved. :(

I love reading Edhat for all the info in Santa Barbara. But what I don't understand are some of the mean and rude comments some people make. Especially without knowing the facts. This Edhat follower says "can't we all be nicer to eachother?"

To tell a couple who are grieving over the loss of their friend and companion that they are guilty of not taking care of this dearly loved pet is cruel - to say the least. Please lose the judgemental attitude and join the kinder and better world on Edhat. If you can't - remember "if you can't say anything nice......, or go away and get on with your day.

Everytime there is something posted about a dog being hit on Edhat, we have these "perfect" dog owners going on about how the dog wasn't cared for enough. How insensitive can you be people?? This was a terrible loss and the last thing anyone wants to hear is how your perfect pooch would never get out of the house or be in traffic. Keep it to yourselves!

If this was at the top of N. Hope, there is a small dog that lives in this neighborhood that is continually out loose - I wonder if that was the dog that was hit and killed? I have often wondered when (not if) this would happen because the dog is often out and wanders around in the middle of the streets. I feel bad for the dog's owners but seriously, if it was this dog, it IS the owner's fault for never taking care of a situation that allowed this dog to be out and about all the time. I also think the driver might not have known that they hit the dog. On a side note, this morning a large chocolate lab was out loose following cars in the upper N. Hope area near Center. I hope its owners realized their dog was out. I am afraid of large dogs and was on my way to work so could not stop to try to find where it belonged.

Dogs do "just get out". A door doesn't latch properly, the dog slips its collar or pulls the leash away, my dog got out through an unknown separation in the fence. I got lucky, we found her quickly, unhurt. I'm all for caution, some say to the extreme, but one of the most dog-responsible/dedicated people I know lost her dog when it pulled the leash free from her hand. Accidents happen. It is heartbreaking WHATEVER the reason. I'm usually a bad pet owner basher, but we don't know the whole story here. My condolences for the loss.

Years ago I had a beautiful dog, who I loved very much and gave the best care to. She was run over by a hit and run driver. Immediately some of you will think, "why didn't you keep her in the yard where she belonged". Well, I did. The edison man, who came to read the meter left the gate ajar and she followed him out. He didn't bother to put her back and sadly, she was run over while I was at work. I tell you this becuase there are many scenarios that can fit here. It's tragic that for whatever reason this little guy was out there an hit by a car. I hope that the assumption that the driver didn't even know he/she had hit the little guy is true and over all, this was simply a tragedy all around. My condolences to the little guys family.

Animal abuse and neglect?! Get some facts first before you start passing your judgment down from your holier than thou throne. You really believe that if a dog owner doesn't have his/her pooch attached at the hip 24/7 that they are guilty of abuse and somehow deserving of the pain and sadness they feel if their beloved dog is killed by a car? You really are heartless....

355 and OP: That hurts my hear, I am so sorry. I always fear anyone opening my gate because of situations like this. My dog is my heart, and I hate how many outside variables factor into his safety.

I know how you feel. While at work my room mate accidentally let my dog out. He did not come home until 2 in the morning and I was devastated because we had coyotes in that area. I was able to take him to work after this so all worked out. I am sure you are a wonderful friend to your dog and he will be fine.

I'm a neighbor on Connie Way, and I just pray the two dog friends I have on this street who often wander outside - I saw them playing just yesterday in the afternoon - Milo and Lily, weren't this dog. Milo is a light brown adorable pug-like mix, and Lily is a black and white pooch. If anyone else knows, please post is so I can take flowers to the owners. This is tragic. I, too, am a great dog lover.

People, accidents happen. I cant tell you how many times I've seen people go into a gated yard and not shut it behind, or leave and not close the gate. It could have been a that kind of thing. People, not just the owners, need to be watching out for little creatures, and take the initiative to leash a dog that in danger, give it a safe place until the owners are found. Ranch rules people: If you open a gate close it behind you.
