Is there anywhere in Santa Barbara to get a really good chocolate malt?

You can get malts at The Habit. Chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, mocha, & coffee.

I like Kahuna Grill's chocolate malt shake. The whip on the Habit's shakes always weirds me out. The actual shake I recall being pretty good, but I prefer Kahuna's.

I wonder if the Habit does Neopaliton malts. I know In-N-Out lets you do that with their shakes. I will have to go try next time and report back!

The Kahuna malt is without doubt the best in town.

I used to make the real malts when I worked at Jolly TIger back in the day. Got the extra in the metal mixing cup too. Anyone still sending out the metal cup???

It surprises me how true it is though Santa Barbara is a kind of paradise, chocolate malts, really good pumpernickel bread, pastrami, thick crusted sour dough bread, jazz radio stations are hard to find. High class problems, admittedly.

@992P - Don't forget about pizza, good Indian food (pretty much any ethnic food other than Mexican). Those are also absent from the bubble.

The Habit makes great malts with real ice cream and whipped cream. I get the vanilla when I want to treat myself. McConnell's also makes good malts and shakes but they are a bit pricer.

Great thread here, because I've often wondered the same thing.

Honestly, In-N-Out's shakes are way too thick to suck up the straw - Drives me nuts!

The best malts need to be made from real ice cream & not soft serve, imo. If it's a truly awesome malt it doesn't need whipped cream to adulterate it one bit.

So, where's the BEST place going to be when this thread ends?

@992P ... if you don't mind using a computer to listen to internet radio, try the website "tunein dot com" for more variety in jazz stations. Tunein is also available on media boxes that you can hook up to your home receiver like the WDTV - they don't dispense malts though.

For years and years, the best malt was at the Treehouse restaurant at the Pepper Tree Inn across from La Cumbre Plaza.

338029P continuing. Peterson's Drive-In also had excellent malts, but of course they are gone. So Treehouse is still the best that I know in town. Can't eat ice cream anymore, so I can't go test them, but give it a try.

I think McConnell's is hard to beat. You're in good shape with the Habit and Kahuna, as well.
And, I hate to admit it because they are a chain, but Carl's Jr. has a mighty tasty hand-made malt these days too.

Peppertree Treehouse restaurant on upper state makes a real MALT not a shake....they use malted...and the old fashioned way of mixing it. It is wonderful!

In n Out shakes are made with more palm oil than real ice cream, so they don't melt and aren't as cold.

For my money (and body and taste buds) I'll go for Kahuna over any other place in town. I'd rather have a cup full of cream and sugar and real chocolate than mystery chemicals and fake whipped cream on top.

In-n-out doesn't serve malts. Shakes are not malts.

In-n-out serves lukewarm shakes.

Remember Hercules Flips? The carob ones? I used to buy that powder and make my own.

So-o-o-o weird to see this posting and all the comments, as only a few hours ago I was going through my box of "lost" 1969-70 memorabilia . Guess what I found? A napkin with the Hercules Flip logo (from Kayser's).

Last night I was talking with a friend about sitting at the lunch counter at Woolworth's. Two days ago, saw photo of Woolworth's ---70s?---on Fbook's "Damn Straight I Grew Up in Santa Barbara." What a jolt back into the past.

Sitting at Woolworth's counter and watching the waitress make your chocolate malt, and then she would put that stainless steel cup under the Hamilton Beach mixer, and mix away. That was a real malt. Ah-h-h-h.

Charlie's Restaurant on Bell Street in Los Alamos still makes authentic chocolate, vanilla and strawberry malts--with real ice cream and malt. Really! Take a drive up the 101 and taste for yourself

ROYAL ICE CREAM PARLOR on Chapala St. at about where the MTD hub is now. That goes back to the late 1940's and 50's. Shades of the Fonz.

Now to throw a monkey wrench ionto the question - when I was but a wee child my all-time favorite drink was an ice cream SODA. I haven't been able to find a soda for lo, these many years. Do you think that place on Chapala will make one?

Tracy, a malt IS a shake. They both use the same maker and the same exact ingredients save one. Add some powder to a shake and you have a malt.

had a small--12 oz-- choc malt at Charlie's in Los Alamos last night and it was good. Very chocolate-y and sweet--if I were making it, I'd add a tiny pinch of salt. They also make Van, strawb, choc-pnut butter. Small is $3.50, Lg--16 oz--is $3.85. They also make shakes and floats. Pineapple, cherry, butterscotch and Oreo.

During the Depression my dad worked at the Royal Ice Cream Parlor. He had studied dairy chemistry at Davis. Things got so bad that they regrefully provided him with a letter saying how unhappy they were to have to let him go.I remember really liking that place as a kid.
