I am seeking a referral for a local
aesthetician and/or dermatologist that
is experienced in caring for young teen
acne. I don't need aggressive
treatments, the problem is not that
severe, just a gentle, compassionate
professional would be great. It's a
tender time.

Dr. Kimberly Hurvitz (805) 618-1616. My good friend works for her as an aesthetician and says she's the best in town.

Dr Louise Stewart, 687-5538, in the Pueblo building across from the hospital. She has two teenaged kids of her own, is excellent with kids, and is all around a sweet person. I've worked for her for 9 years, and she treat lots of young adults & teenagers with acne. And she's exactly what you describe wanting - gentle and compassionate. 492P: That's a fallacy. Unless you are smearing chocolate on your face & leaving it there, you won't break out from it. Also, wow, I didn't realize the trolls were paying members now. Great.

Coconut oil has cleared up my face really well! It may sound freaky but really coating yourself in it with some lavendar essential oil before bed is a little piece of paradise! Smooth as a baby's bottom come the AM!

Jojoba oil works well too. Sounds counterproductive, but it actually works.

I really like Dr Louise Stewart too (across from Cottage). Just don't go to the *other* Stewart dermatologist on Mission, she was incompetent and didn't give a very complete skin exam when I saw her a few years ago.

Dealt with regular, not cystic acne long into middle age; finally ended up on oral antibiotic low dose totally cured the problem. The steps: 1) Over the counter benzoyl peroxide treatments (also in the tv ad system) 2) topical antibiotic cream (clindamycin), 3) some other topical, then 4) oral antibiotic, which I resisted for decades. And no, diet makes no difference. When I stopped the pills acne finally stopped too. I used my primary care doc. Know people who like Dr. Logan. Lucky that the young 'un gets to see a dr., g'luck!

I really like Dr. Logan. He literally saved my life a couple of years ago when he recognized the signs of a DVT that I had thought was a reaction to a bug bite. And he's a SMHS grad!

509, it is true, at least for me it was. As an adult I had a period of time where when I ate commercial chocolate I'd get adult acne really bad. I had to give up commercial chocolate. When I did the acne cleared up. I did find some organic chocolate that I could eat though so that helped.

Esthetician Reyna Angel at Skin Deep has years of personal experience with acne - and has many young clients who have improved dramatically with a combination of professional acne facials, Microdermabrasion (helps to prevent congestion and scarring), and recommended home care products with advanced technology (Dr. Murad, Dermalogica, Jan Marini Skin Research - for example). The key is to balance the skin with a comprehensive approach. Pharmaceutical prescriptions and over-the-counter drug store/commercial products will often provide a bandade (short term) benefit. However, over the many years we have worked with parents, teens, and other customers and clients of all ages at Skin Deep - professional skincare products and treatments (combining botanical and clinical ingredients/technology) provide the most successful results for the long term.

I definitely agree with Dr. Novatt. He did wonders for me when I was a student at UCSB suffering from acne, and now I'm in my thirties and I still see him once a year for mole checks. He's not warm and fuzzy, but he is good!

ACNE! Scourge of The Teens! Advisory from a Long Ago Teenager Many humans don't fully realize that we humans are all different. Faces, figures, skins and acne variations, too. Google "Remedies for Teenage Acne". Before going to the doctor, offer this to the teenager and suggest reading about the changes at puberty and what's happening to that unique teenager inside . As a teen, for me, the first surprise was that my great friends Hershey and Coca-Cola and Pepsi had done this Art in Pimples Tattoo all over MY Face! That first cut of chocolate was tough (Teenagers BURN energy and NEED food and I liked Hersheys and Baby Ruths. I LOVED them!). Then, cutting Coca-Cola and Pepsi was worse! :-) For me, as a teen, it was CHANGE YOUR DIET! --Ouch! It took months to realize that a Coke or a Hershey Bar would make this teenagers face literally blossom with bumps. The realization was highly motivating and a great remedy for about 80 to 90% of the problem: Quit chocolate, Coke and Pepsi. After that came LAVA bar soap (or similar is okay) to clean the oily skin, a "hickey-popper" (a small. slender, metal tool maybe 3" or 4" long with U shaped open-ended spaces to center the pimple and just press to pop) (also pressed blackheads up and out -- best to have warm. moist skin via hot, wet, wash cloths). Then the application of the white liquid drying stuff at bedtime. Puffs of white liquid to dry at night and be washed off before leaving the house for school in the morning. ... [ more ]

Actually, it's been disproven over and over that diet is at all related to acne in teenagers. They can eat all the soda, chocolate and greasy burgers and fries and unless they have a food sensitivity (totally different) it's never going to cause acne. It's hormones, heredity and hygiene. Hormones are rampant during the teen years. The same hormonal surge that causes growth and body changes can stir up acne. Most will outgrow it. A small few will battle it for life. When us oldies in our 20s and 30s have problems with acne around the jawline on one side of our faces....guess what? Clean yer cell phones and the problem "mysteriously" vanishes. While some zits are from hormones, the bottom line is that bacteria is the enemy when trying to keep skin clear. So go ahead and eat the burger and coke.
