Have Me…Your Way

By Annette Magneheim

Sunlight shone through a crack in the curtains. Dawn had arrived, and with it another beautiful day in Santa Barbara. In the distance, the bells of the Mission tolled, and a train whistle signaled its passing. Birds sang out and the sounds of traffic were just beginning. Everything seemed so regular, so normal. And yet, nothing was normal at all…

Steve had just come downstairs and the boys were in the bathroom getting ready for school. I was in the kitchen, making quick time at getting the cereal on the table. Today was the day of the first episode of “The real Housewives of Santa Barbara” and I was anxious to see if I recognized anybody. How cool would that be, I thought to myself. Maybe I would see some of my friends in the background. But first, I needed to take care of a few pressing issues. The Garden and Laundry both needed attention. I went outside the water the Tomatoes, Onions and Kale. It was going to be a Long, Hot Day so I wanted to let the water get deep down into the roots. We’ve been having a bit of a drought and these Sunny, Hot and Dry Days were starting to take its toll on the Foliage. I had just finished tending the garden when I heard a screech from above.

A big black bat flew down at me from the oak tree in the middle of the yard. I tried to run for cover but it was relentless in its effort to attack me. Where did this crazy bat come from in broad daylight? I thought. These animals normally appear at night so what is he doing here now? I ran for the shelter of the garage behind me. He dove at me again and this time he got me in the leg. I fell on a pile of leaves which gave way to a deep hole underneath. I landed on my back and felt my arm break. I screamed in agony when I felt my bone sticking out of my elbow. My body went numb and I laid there hoping someone saw me. I looked up and saw a man lean over at the top of the hole. I never saw him before. He looked down at me, chuckled and said…Looks like we’ll finally be having meat for dinner tonight!
