While walking at lake Los Carneros this morning, I saw these dead fish. Anyone know why?

I think its a tough deal, that is a preserve, so using what it needs is hard to allow. A fountain, or an aerator, (an outboard motor) OK I know the birders might not like the last one, but it works!!

Hmm, looks like a classic case of neglecting to inhale again after that last exhale. That'll do it everytime. ;-)

That lake is pretty stagnant. Lots of eutrophication which leads to algal blooms. That would be my guess.

Why are so many of the comments here nothing more than snide remarks?

Because its a silly question. Silly questions get snide or funny remarks.

people that don't give serious answers are just having a bit of fun since they don't know the answer. makes life interesting! plus, this is edhat where snide remarks are king! you must be a newbie.

The snide comments made by would-be comedians are a good indicator of why the planet is in big trouble. When you try to show genuine concern for animals or the environment, the alpha-folk make you feel like a fool for caring. Nice job, humans-good luck with your future-seems like you're going to need it.

Maybe because of the warmer than usual temperatures we've been having this summer and fall? I imagine that could lead to warmer water temperatures and less oxygen in the water, or something like that (i'm no aqua-biologist). Could lead to more fish dying. Just an amateur biologist's opinion here.

This is not a silly question - thanks for asking and please ignore the snide responses. Thanks also to the folks who actually came up with serious answers.

Every 4-5 years there is a die off. Algal blooms deplete the oxygen and the fish die. The algal blooms are made more severe by fertilizer runoff from local farms.

It is very sad and just like the Bird Refuge. It's a lack of oxygen and conducive to algae blooms. Aeration or a good rain would help more fish from dying.

Why do you print those silly comments in all of the comments on your site? If someone asks a reasonable question print the reasonable answers. All the snide stupid answers just clutter up the site. I stop reading when I get to a group of them.

It would be nice if they added some sort of aeration to the lake to avoid this. I know many people will hate me saying this, but I would love to be able to go fishing there with my kids and catch some decent size fish.

There are some fish right there you don't have to go fishing.

634 You can take your kids and fish there, if you are a decent fisherman or just lucky there are some very "decent size fish" to catch!! Tight lines!!
