Nuts and Seeds
updated: Oct 29, 2012, 12:02 PM

I am starting a diet comprised of mostly nuts and seeds. Where is the cheapest place in town to get bulk sunflower seeds, flax seeds, and various nuts?

Places People Are Talking About:

CostcoTrader Joe'sTri- County Produce
Whole Foods

I am curious as to what this type of diet is for. Trader Joe's and Fresh & Easy have pretty good prices on nuts.

Try Tri- County Produce. May have in bulk.

I get mine variously at Tri-Counties, Whole Foods, Lassens, Lazy Acres and Farmer's Market. Not sure there's a big price difference, but I've never done an edhat-style price comparison. I would think ordering online would be cheapest, though quality of course will vary.
Watch your Omega 6s vs. 3s though. You'll be way out of balance unless you get 3s elsewhere.

Nuts can be very high fat so does your diet want you on high fat nuts or low fat nuts?

My word, I'm interested in what this diet would be, too. I lost 105 pounds six years ago by eating lots of fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, no alcohol, no fried foods, miles and miles of walking, and limited portions of all other foods (including nuts and seeds). By continuing eating the same way, I've been able to maintain the loss. Always interested in other peoples' methods, though!

Sounds like the Paleo Diet. I purchase mine at Lazy Acres and Trader Joe's. I specifically like walnuts and pumpkin seeds for their magneium content. Best of luck!!

Surprised no one mentioned buying organic nuts. The prices on nuts of all kinds are through the roof. If you're on a program where you are eating only certain foods, most definitely you should make sure it is all organic product you are buying. Online would be the best bet, I would think.

I buy my nuts & seeds at Tr-County in bulk. I'd be interested in the price comparison too if you can pull that off. Also - nuts are high in fat, right? What kind of diet is this?

I don't think it's Paleo. Paleo diet also includes meat, eggs, vegetables.

Lots of good comments and observations so far. I have found that shopping around is good. Nuts are fairly pricey. Whole foods has a great selection as does Lazy Acres and Tri-County. Tri-County generally has a better price for basically the same thing, but then again, with the price of gas, it generally pays off to get what's closest to your area. And, if you don't mind buying from Costco, they have good prices on Walnuts and Almonds.
For veggies, it's hard to beat Farmer's Market for price and freshness, but Market Place Albertsons and Tri-County are good options if you don't want to wait for the market.
When I was juicing (see movies "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" or "Forks Over Knives") Farmers Market saved my budget!
If you insist on Organic, then be prepared to pay more.
Remember, balance is typically better than extremes.

OP here. It is not a strictly seed and nut diet as I will be eating a whole host of other things (eggs, chicken, salmon, veggies etc) I am looking for high calorie foods, such as nuts. Basically I want to be eating a good amount of nuts and seeds per day because they are very good for you.

Sweetheart...it's no coincidence they call this the "Caveman Diet", because you have to be as dumb as a caveman to try it. Do some research. Only quacks recommend this diet. Extremely dangerous to your body. Makes absolutely no sense nutritionally.

Maybe a little OT but I truly believe people should eat what their ancestors ate..it's what your body can handle and of course watch HOW MUCH you eat of anything. If you are a combination of very different ancestorial diets then you can try one or a combination and figure out what feels best for you. Good luck to you.

I do not think this dieter is dumb. Quite the reverse. This does not sound like a particular diet. It looks like the nuts and seeda are providing nutritious snacks along with her general diet. Very healthy. Good luck with this.

336769 - I have eaten nuts for the last few decades, and enjoy excellent health without having had anything close to the flu or a cold for over 15 years - with NO flu shots. Studies have found that people who eat nuts, generally have better cardiac health. Nuts are also high in minerals, one of which - magnesium - is important for healthy bones and avoiding osteoporosis. Brazil nuts have high selenium content. And what's more - nuts are not processed (raw) or minimally processed.

Pistachios are one of my favorite foods to veg out with. Costcos are of rather high quality, I get them regularly.

I also suggest (if you haven't already) to try almond butter instead of peanut butter. Almonds are much more nutritious than peanuts, but it takes a little while your palette adapts.

For veggies, I like lazy acres. Prices can be high on some stuff, but for my lettuce needs, it's cheap enough. Generally get green leaf lettuce and it is really good.

Canned salmon and canned herring at trader joe's are pretty good, and lower mercury content than tuna. I eat these about every other day.

Personally, I like Whole Foods for nuts. TJ's is good for things like almonds, but I feel like their walnuts aren't the tastiest. If you're going to be adding in handfuls of nuts to your diet every day then you should enjoy eating them, right?

So I'd go for a mixture of cheap and premium. Maybe experiment with what you like and decide if it's worth it to you to continue buying a more expensive variety and cheapening down another type, etc.

Also, while I think nuts and seeds are great for you, personally, I do have to warn you about diverticulitis, just in case you aren't aware that too much of a good thing can have it's drawbacks! Good luck to you!

I agree about Costco. Trader Joe's used to have an acceptable price for walnuts, but now that they're inching towards $8/pound I think you gotta hit up Costco. They have almonds in large bags as well as pistachios and maybe even pecans.

I've been scoring honest to goodness raw almonds (not pasturized) at the Farm Cart in Carpinteria. Of course sometimes they're available, sometimes not.
I use Whole Foods for hemp seeds, chia seeds, and almonds.

I'm 99% vegan/raw, lost a ton 'o weight on a prolonged juice fast and am continuing on to my goal with predominantly juice and raw fruits and veggies and almond milk, raw plant protein smoothies and walking.

I concur on organic and yes, it's expensive; but without your health; you're bankrupt.

I'll let you all in on the great secrets of weight loss. Make sure you've got a fresh cartridge in your printer and plenty of paper.

Consume fewer calories. Exercise regularly.

That's it. That's the entire secret. There's only one reason these fad diets appear to help you lose weight. You're paying attention to what you consume and limiting it to some small group of foods that requires planning to acquire. That's it. That's why they "work".

Since nuts and seeds are high fat, best place to store them is in the fridge. Rancid fats taste bitter and are unhealthy. Don't eat nuts that are rancid. Try to shop where nuts are kept cool or, at the most, room temp low 70's. Rotate stock rather than buy huge quantities that need to be stored for long periods.

You can use nut fats to replace other fats in cooking; rather than add more fat calories, you are trading out for healthier mono and polyunsaturated fats. A small blade coffee grinder can be used to make nut meal, or use a blender to make nut butters.Though snacking on raw nuts is easy and healthy, there are many good vegan and vegetarian food blogs with recipes galore for nuts and seeds as ingredients.

Because nuts and seeds are so calorie-dense, small quantities with lots of greens is a moderate, not extreme diet choice.

I always buy my nuts from Gelson's on sale. I find shopping the sale, no matter where it it is the best price. I just stock up when the price is good. You will see them on sale soon for all the baking that goes on over the holidays.

What ones eats in moderation is the key. If one ate small amounts of bread, one would be continuously hungry. Eating the right foods that are nutrition-dense almost forces one to eat small amounts, because one does not feel hungry.

Thus the choice of food is far more important in reducing consumption - far more effective (and healthier) than will power. Choosing the right foods can cause fat to rapidly disappear, with the dieter hardly aware of it because there is no hunger felt.
