Lakers Game Cable Viewing...Airball!
updated: Oct 24, 2012, 7:42 PM

Lakers season starts one week from tonight. Time Warner and Cox don't sound close to an agreement meaning everyone in Santa Barbara is going to be S.O.L.. You can't go to the Bar to watch the game either, because they don't' have it either.

OP here. I meant to say next Tuesday. Sorry about that.

However this is insane, at this point, the only way to watch Lakers game is watch the games when they are on National TV or stream it online. No bar will have it and I just read another article about how that's going to cost them $$$ in lost revenue.

Blame the Lakers for taking the money, but Boycott Time Warner until they are forced to give us the channel for much less than $3.95 per household. I hope Time Warner takes a bath on this one and doesn't ever recoup the $3 billion they paid the Lakers. This will be done all over again with the Dodgers next year. Now is the only chance we have to stand up to the cable companies. Let them know before anyone bids on the Dodgers rights that it is not worth everyone having to pay $50 a year to watch ONE team play 50 games.

Does it matter? The Fakers aren't going to be doing much beyond losing a lot of games.

No sweat as there's the far more important World Series to watch right now.

There's plenty of basketball games to be played between now & late May.

Boycotting Time-Warner is pretty easy for Santa Barbarans because it isn't available here.

Let those who want Time-Warner and the Lakers pay the extra monthly fee.

@402 - Unless you buy the NBA package for $180, Directv doesn't get the games either.

Agreed, 431p. Every other sport has special packages that I have to buy if I want to watch the games, and as far as I'm concerned Laker fans shouldn't get any special treatment!

Everyone in Santa Barbara? No, I don't care about the NBA so I'll be fine.

Not one preseason WIN has been missed. Just 7 losses.

Yes, if Cox decides to pay TW for these games then it should charge customers in a special tier for the games. There is no reason that non Laker fans should be charged this huge amount of money.

402, DirectTV won't have it either and 440, NBA League Pass will blackout both the Lakers and Clippers because you're in their media market.

Ah yes, the benefits of huge corporations having monopoly pricing power. But hey, they're job creators, right? Customers don't matter, not to the job creators anyway, it's the stockholders they're beholden to. Welcome the the modern economy.

As for the disappointment of not seeing every Lakers game on cable TV? Life sucks and then you die.... get over it.

This is All Jerry Buss. It is his choice to extract even more money from fans. Respond by boycott of the team.

A game takes 150 minutes with only 48 minutes of that (33%) being game time. Commercials were not enough Jerry? Cable bills were not enough?

Get prepaired Dodger fans. Over paying for a team with leverage for $2B means the same lunicy is coming to them too. These business models will fail and crash the leagues.

I'd say that YES is a prime example of why these channels wont fail. It fact it made $400 million in 2010. TWC is looking to copy that formula. Everything I've read so far says that the behind the scenes access is what sets SportsNet way apart from FoxSports.

How can you boycott a team where you can't subscribe? Not go to games? They are soldout anyways. Not buy merchandise? Okay, I already have some.

485 has a good point-- I never thought I'd say it but the Clippers are better and they're not in this TWC B.S. I'd be happy to be wrong about the first point but this TWC - Cox situation is so stupid that's all I need to become a Clippers fan.

Actually maybe that is a better way to boycott TWC. They would never expect us all to become Clippers fans. Haha

I don't get the 990 AM signal on my radios - maybe you have to have one of those huge antennas or live up in the hills.

This was in an article today...

Both (DirectTV & Cox ) also said they had offered to sell the channel a la carte to those willing to pay separately for it, or offer it on a non-basic tier, but TWC is calling that a deal breaker.

I'd rather move to Lompoc than become a Clippers fan.

Lakers will be extremely lucky to make the playoffs this year. An easy prediction: Lakers season record will be 39-43.

Then I call on Cox to stick by their guns. Don't charge their non Laker fan customers. If TW wants any money back for their $3 million boondoggle then they will have to extract it from the willing only.

COMMENT 335622 agree helpful negative off topic

2012-10-25 03:57 PM

Yes 335577. 39-43. And when all is said and done people will say it is a GOOD 39-43. The Lakers will be horrible this year. Their problems will start on the injury front as Kobe, Howard, and Nash, and Gasol all miss extended play early on. Metta World Moron contributes to their problems by getting suspended for attacking fans in Brooklyn. Mike Brown will get fired after LA loses 10 straight games mid season. Lakers will be well over 10 games below .500 at some point this season before finishing strong. But 39-43 will be 1 or 2 games out of the playoffs.

The Lakers have missed the playoffs only five times in their history. They have more championships than some teams have playoff wins. Their starters have 33 all star game appearances, 4 DOYs award and 3MVPs. I think they will be alright.

Good for them. Just so long as I don't have to pay to not watch them...

COMMENT 335650 agree helpful negative off topic

2012-10-25 05:19 PM

Sorry 335634...you forgot one thing...that in the Lakers history they have never had a starting five that is this old (and banged up at the start of the season).

Of course I am discounting Andrew Bynum, who will inevitably be on the bench with something wrong. but when he is replaced with Antawn Jamison the Lakers average age will be 35. Crusty.

Chalk this up as season six where they don't make the playoffs.

COMMENT 335672 agree helpful negative off topic

2012-10-25 06:21 PM

Andrew Bynum? Have you been living under a rock? They traded Bynum for Dwight Howard.

Nash, Kobe, Meta World Peace, Pau Gasol and yes Dwight Howard. Jamison, Jordan Hill and Jodie Meeks on the bench.

The only thing crusty is the the topping on the weak sauce you brought in that argument.

All subscribers will be paying Time Warner (via Cox) if TW gets its way and forces all subscribers to shell out $3.95 for the channel, much like ESPN gets. So yes, you can boycott TW by telling Cox you don't want it unless its a la cart, which you would sign up for 6 months, then cancel it in the playoffs and offseason.

COMMENT 335725 agree helpful negative off topic

2012-10-25 09:00 PM

I'd pay for it regardless. I watch ESPN just the same. I'd be willing to pay TWC for the right to stream it online, but that isn't legal so that isn't happening either. Not to say I couldn't illegally, just the quality is crap.
