I'LL TAKE MY POPCORN WITH CHEESE
updated: Oct 23, 2012, 7:50 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

Anyone recommend any good cheesy 70s movies for my Netflix cue? Feeling nostalgic. Nothing really violent or sleazy. Think Omega Man or Phantom of the Paradise. Looking forward to the list. Cheers.

Not 70s (1987), but you can NEVER go wrong with "The Princess Bride"...:) For the 70s, how about "The Way We Were" or "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore"?

1968, but "I Love You, Alice B. Toklas".

Also "Shampoo" and "Heaven Can Wait", both with Warren Beatty and both good yet cheezy.

A Clockwork Orange, Soylent Green, THX 1138, Dark Star.

Lots of great and campy SF in the 70s. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_science_fiction_films:_1970s for a pretty much full list.

Very few of these are available on streaming Netflix.

You'll need more than three hours but how about, "Heaven's Gate."

Airplane, Caddyshack, Blazing Saddles, The Goodbye Girl, Animal House, and my all-time favorite: Young Frankenstein

My favourite from the '50's is "High Society", with Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong.

And, more recently, "Steel Magnolias" with Sally Field, Olympia Dukakis, Shirley Maclean and the debut of Julia Roberts.

Harold & Maude is a great, great flick. NOT cheesy. Here are some cheddar cheesy movies of the 70s (I looked them up):

Blackula/ Star Wars (c'mon--cheesy)
Lipstick/ Day of the Dolphin
The Prophecy/ Three Days of the Condor
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes/ T. R. Baskin
It (supposedly one of the worst movies of all time!)

These were only a few of the many I found on a"Cheesy Movies of the '70s" site. Personally, "Three Days of the Condor" is one of my favorite movies. T.R. Baskin is quintessential schmaltz. Perfect for a rainy evening and hot chocolate in front of the fire . . . Doubt if Netflix has it.

Cheesy = "cheap, unpleasant, or blatantly inauthentic." Some movies recommended above may be offbeat or dated but few are truly cheesy. In the cheese category, I'd recommend Convoy. Or anything starring Burt Reynolds other than Deliverance, which is memorable but not cheesy.

Hello 323 re: Reading comprehension! I was going to mention in my post that Airplane! WAS FILMED mostly during August 1979 ! I am pretty sure that COUNTS. My apologies for trying to keep things short. Mea culpa.
"Airplane! emerged in 1980 as a sharply perceptive parody of the big-budget disaster films that dominated Hollywood during the 1970s [and] introduced a much-needed deflating assessment of the tendency of theatrical film producers to push successful formulaic movie conventions beyond the point of logic".

Violence for the 70's is nothing compared to the 90's or today. You won't even find this low level violence on prime time. So check out Death Wish, Blazing Saddles or Pink Panther.

323: Making movies takes *time.* Release dates are sometimes different from production 'wraps.'

Airplane! Filmed in August 1979 [released in 1980]

Caddyshack: The film was shot over 11 weeks during the autumn of 1979. [released in 1980]

Flash Gordon: During preliminary sessions for The Game in the summer of 1979, Queen were approached by Italian director Dino de Laurentiis, slated to direct a film adaptation of the 1930s comic hero, Flash Gordon. [released in 1980]

Heaven's Gate: The film began shooting on April 16, 1979, in Glacier National Park, east of Kalispell, Montana, with the majority of the town scenes filmed in the Two Medicine area, north of the village of East Glacier Park. The film finished shooting in March 1980... [released in 1980]

actually, Mystic Pizza might be Julia Roberts' debut movie.

And 323, you didn't wag your finger at Dr Strangelove, from the early 60's. Unless there was a remake?
