I'm looking for a new gym in downtown Santa Barbara. Now that I've learned my current gym owner is in
court for filming young girls, I'd prefer not to go there anymore. I currently pay $30/month and am given a
key to access the gym at any time. I live downtown so walking there would be a plus. Any
recommendations?

New as opposed to what? Where do you go now?

What amenities are you looking for? Pool? Racquet ball courts? Weight machines?

The local trails and beaches are free, more fun, and you don't have to worry about being in a room full of men and women constantly glacing in the mirror at you and themselves (filming or not). Gymless for 3 plus years and in better shape than I was before!

OP again- I don't need the frills, just the average weight and cardio machines, hopefully one that isn't too crowded with enough space to use free weights. Thanks 777- I enjoy outdoor activities as well, but winter is coming and I really enjoy a good mirror stare down, minus cameras.

It's not Santa Barbara, but I signed up for AC4 fitness in Goleta a week ago. Even during peek hours it's empty and it's open 24 hours a day. Half of the Cardio Machines also backfeed the electrical grid which is kind of neat to think you're helping to go green.

24 Hour Fitness, State and De La Guerra, has had a plan that, after an upfront fee, the monthly is $29 per month. They have it all: big weight room, many machines, pool, classes, on three floors...and open 24 hours!

Spectrum fitness was always nice when I went there years ago, but the prices kept rising and rising. I don't focus on working out much anymore, so things may be different now. They had plenty of equipment though, and the it seemed like everything I needed in a gym at the time.

There are a lot of gyms downtown. Spectrum has a few locations and there is always the YMCA. I think that the OP just posted so that they could tell the public which gym the guy owns. There has been some curiosity about that today but it wasn't included in the articles about the guy, at least not earlier.

Spectrum is popular and it's in walking distance downtown. I tried 24hr Fitness and found it disgusting. It's incredibly dirty and due to the low fees, many people use the membership as a place to shower if they have no other options. I've heard a couple people having issues with the pool due to lack of ventilation (it's in an underground basement) and over-chlorination.

I've got a rock hard 12-pack from doing 12oz curls at Sportsman Lounge. They have a stairmaster there too...on the way up to the bathroom.

784 for the win! "... peek hours ..." I couldn't resist. The name of the gym Sawicki owns was posted at least 3 times in the thread about his case, and is easy to find online. Is he the only owner or a co-owner?

The most important way to choose a gym is one you will go to every week and workout hard. With that criteria I say go to Crossfit Pacific Coast. No machines. All free weights and encouragement! I would recommend Crossfit Goodland, but that is in Goleta. Nick Conn is the owner and a good coach and focuses on weight lifting, which the studies show is so important, especially as we get older.

Yeah! Double down on 817. The trainer there adds as much weight as you can handle without you ever having to change position. Many a time I've stumbled out of there with aching biceps from too many reps.

There's another gym with the same ideo as Key2Fitness where you just have a key and it's open 24 hours a day called, ProForm Fitness & Trainging PFT. I think crossfit is great, but it's very expensive just to go twice a week.

As a cancer survivor, I found the S.B.A.C. to fit the bill perfectly. Paula and Erin really know the facts about fitness and it helped me fight the disease totally.
