Hidden Camera Footage
updated: Oct 22, 2012, 8:10 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

The trial has finally started for former SBPD Detective, Brian Sawicki. There's an article about it in the Independent where it states that one of the items the detectives recovered was a video of a hidden camera in a bathroom. It doesn't say where the video came from, but I know he owns a gym in town and wonder if it's from the gym. Would the police notify the people on the video that they had been secretly taped?

A SB police officer arrested for exposing himself in front of two 13-year old girls in 2009 was just taking a photo to share with his girlfriend, his lawyer said. (10/23/12)

If it were you on the tape, would you REALLY want tons of detectives studying those tapes to figure out who you were so they could contact you? I doubt they would do it, seems like it would bring cause much more harm than good...

500, no. Its far more good to report such a crime than to ignore it. It's been proven over and over that crimes like this are done by people who "escalate" their crimes. From invasions of privacy to physical assaults. I would much rather put my modesty in the hands of professional criminal investigators than to risk assault, rape or molestation of innocent people down the line....

Yes, I would REALLY rather help prosecute someone for this kind of crime than do nothing. Doing nothing is in itself a crime of ignoring criminal behavior in the community. I wouldn't want that on my conscience.

500: YES. If I was filmed in a bathroom without my consent on a hidden camera by some sleazeball, I would want law enforcement to investigate it and prosecute the guilty party. Thanks for asking.

Sometimes, while in a public restroom, I think of the guy who had a camera hidden just under the toilet seat (ladies' room). How is it no one ever found his camera, until many, many "seated" women later? Ick factor 9000.

504: "It's been proven over and over that crimes like this are done by people who "escalate" their crimes." Really? Cite one study that proves this. Just one. Acts of peeping are bad enough. There's no need to boot-strap it into something more serious in order to convince anyone that it should be prosecuted. Everyone who is caught doing this is prosecuted. The Salem witch-hunt mentality that reveals itself whenever a sex crime is mentioned is yet another, but far more ordinary, human frailty.

504: Nobody is talking about not reporting the crime. The question was whether or not to notify the victims.

What could be gained with this knowledge?

Telling people they were secretly taped (assuming that's ALL that happened) does nothing to further the prosecution of the perpetrator and unnecessarily causes anxiety, frustration and anger for the victims.

Now, IF the perpetrator sold the images and they were subsequently published or otherwise distributed, THEN I would say, "yes, the victims deserve to be told".

Also? Evidently some folks are missing the point: THIS INFORMATION CAME TO LIGHT DUE TO A TRIAL. The perpetrator is already being prosecuted.

Exactly my thoughts when I posted the question, 549. Not saying they shouldn't prosecute him for this, they definitely should, I was just saying what's the need in identifying the victims? Why bring attention to something that will no doubt change the victims' lives forever, when the opposite would change no one's life but the perpetrator's? It doesn't change that he is being prosecuted. What it does change is the victims and how they live their lives - and I really can't see how knowing you were one of the victims would make you feel better, only worse. One side of me would definitely want to know, but if you think about the long term effects...that's not the kind of paranoia I want to define my life FOREVER. To each his own.

On a side note, it's been very interesting to hear both sides of this debate though - I haven't enjoyed actual intellectual conversation here in awhile :)

Interesting that his gym key 2 fitness is the home base for a well known Sb female bikini/figure competition training program. A lot of females workout and practice for their shows there.

Oh no! I go to this gym and had no idea about the owner. I just saw him there yesterday. The Police should absolutely notify people who attend this gym if they found recording devices here. I would definitely want to know!

When people engage in this type of conduct do they ever consider the shame and heartbreak it brings on their families not to mention their friends and employers.

The guy obviously has mental problems, maybe a stint in jail will "cure" him.

Yes, I would want to know if I was one of his victims. Why be embarrassed when you were probably just one of many victims and if showing the tape helps convict him great! I think they would obscure the faces of the victims when showing the tape to the jurors.
