Nicholas Allen Enns, age 34, of Santa Barbara, was arrested for intimidating a
witness by threat of force or violence and burglary, both felonies, and
resisting or delaying an officer, a misdemeanor. Enns threatened to harm the
victim's dog if she called the police.
On October 19, 2012 at 12:32 a.m., SBPD Officer Aaron Denbrook and Officer Brock
Maudlin responded to a call of a domestic disturbance at an apartment on the
2500 block of Orella Street. When Officer Denbrook and Officer Maudlin arrived
the disturbance was still taking place. When they announced their presence the
suspect, Enns, fled on foot. He ran for a distance of approximately two blocks,
stopping when he was told he was going to be shot with a Taser. He was
initially arrested for resisting or delaying an officer. Once Enns was in
custody the officers continued with their investigation into the domestic
disturbance.
Investigation indicates that Enns is the ex-boyfriend of the victim, a 30-year
old woman. When the incident occurred Enns appeared at the victim's doorstep
with the intention of spending the night. The victim told Enns that he was not
welcome in her residence because he was drunk. She told him that he needed to
leave and go home, and then shut and locked her front door. Enns became angry
and yelled at the victim. Instead of leaving he went to the side of the
victim's apartment and tried to gain entry through the bedroom window. The
victim tried to prevent Enns from climbing through the window, however he
overpowered her and gained entry. The victim then told Enns that she was going
to call the police and fled to a neighbor's apartment. Enns grabbed the
victim's dog, a miniature pinscher, and walked outside with it. He confronted
the victim outside of her neighbor's apartment and while holding the dog with a
hand around its neck, threatened to break the dog's neck if she called the
police. The victim pleaded with Enns to not hurt her dog. Enns continued to
threaten to do so until he was able snatch the victim's cell phone from her
hand. Enns put down the dog when Officer Denbrook and Officer Maudlin arrived
on scene.
Enns provided a brief statement to Officer Denbrook. He stated that his
intention for entering the victim's apartment was to look for his cell phone and
that he ran from the police because he knew he was in trouble. He said that he
didn't really want to hurt the dog.
Enns was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on the aforementioned charges
with a bail amount of $100,000.00. Photo provided by the Santa Barbara County
Sheriff's Office.
